Wesnoth-Like icons for the Forums

Post by Prophet »

Hi,

i wanted to suggest that the forum becomes more wesnoth like icons.

I have allready created an allmost complete replacement set as an example (see attachment). They are free for use. What do you think of the idea?

Maybe the topic and forum icons aren't that good but i think the buttons i created could realy improve forum look and feel :)

Greetings, Prophet

I think Rhuvaen made the theme, so you might want to PM him.

/tsr - who really likes the idea and hopes that someone will expand the icon set to also include 'new topic', 'post reply', etc buttons.

I think Mist made the theme, actually. He was in charge of the migration anyway, so odds are that he knows better than Rhuvaen.

Hi Prophet,

Sorry I didn't look at this earlier... I was "away from wesnoth" for over a week.

I like your ideas and icons. I just think that:

1. the colors of the scrolls won't work well with the background

2. the green orbs + green poison is confusing

I think the problem is that our item graphics in-game aren't that great to start with... perhaps making some new images that could go in the game would be great, too (a white scroll, for instance). Not sure if you are up for that.

I love your use of the orcish banner for the sticky posts, and will probably try to work that in. ;)

Right now, there's a theme update coming up and I'll see then how the icons fit in or clash.

Yes, i think you are right on that point. I'll look in the wesnoth graphics repo if i can find something that fits more. I am not really good at creating graphics my self. Maybe i'll post a updated version in a few days.

I am getting a rather garish shade of pink, for the 'unread posts' icon. (Image) Is it suppose to be that shade? :(

C'mon, it's your problem if you don't use a team-color capable browser... :annoyed: :P

Seriously, the color isn't pink, but since the image uses a gradient to white it mostly appears that way (the previous color was peach and not orange for the same reason). Replacing that with a different gradient (red to yellow, for instance) would be a lot more work, and I prefer to spend my time on something more valuable. And I'd much rather have a completely new icon than spend this much work on the stock one.

For instance, I think what would work well would be to have some kind of rolled-up scroll with a colored ribbon and/or seal. If somebody knows GPL licensed graphics one could use for that, please post a link here.

Of course, none of this prevents anyone else from making improvements to the icons. I'll attach the current imageset below.

Something like this? I looked round the internets, but that's boring, so I went ahead and drew one.

It's a .svg, so I can make changes, produce different sizes etc. easily.

Edit: btw, the topic icons you posted (and this one) are in the rather odd size of 19x18. Do they have to be that exact size?

Well, I can upload it tommorow, and well see. Do you feel like testing your work in a live enviroment? :D
And they don't have to be exactly the same size, but they shouldn't be larger than size of table cell or they start to stretch the forum, and that won't look good.

Ah, OK, then this one (at 23x21) is a lot clearer, since it's the size I was looking at while doing the svg xD

I'll put together the locked, unread etc tomorrow, hopefully.

I think a closed scroll would make a better unread, while an open scroll would be read, since you have to open it to read it. Don't forget that there's read/unread locked, red/unread popular, red/unread announcement, red/unread sticky, and moved...
