Wesnoth 1.3.16

Post by ivanovic »

Wesnoth 1.3.16 is out!

This is the third beta release for 1.4 and probably the last one, soon we might be in rc-state. Most notable about this release is that it marks the start of the hard string freeze. This means none of the original strings will be changed now, so that translators do at least have a slight chance to get their translation complete.

But now to some "real" changes: Lots of tiny things were fixed all over the place. Thanks to the scripts provided by esr really many little typos were found and fixed, so that the whole game should appear in a better state. When uploading or downloading content from/to the add-on server the connection should not disconnect so often anymore. And finally balancing of the bats and rangers was adjusted.

On a slightly different matter: Since Aleksi is currently very busy and TimothyP seems to be MIA, West was promoted to be the new "Lord of Music", that is the one guy being in charge when it comes to final decisions regarding music that should be added to (or removed from) the game.

What else was changed? Some updated graphics, translations and probably a lot more that I am too lazy to mention now. For a more complete list (not 100% complete, some devs tend to forget adding entries) have a look at the changelog. A changelog with the changes that might be visible to most users (and only includes these) is the players_changelog.

Bug note: scenario 5 in the campaign Liberty crashes in 1.3.16, you can find a fix here.

Here is the xDelta for the sources:

Check http://www.wesnoth.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7034 for info on using xdelta.

The Windows binary is not available yet. Once it is you can find it on the download page.

The MacOSX binary is not available yet. Once it is you can find it on the download page.

The OpenSolaris binary is not available yet. Once it is you can find it on the download page.

Looks like there are almost no binaries ready, but all the known packagers have been contacted. Gentoo already includes the binary in their tree, but it is hardmasked. The Debian packager is currently working on cooking the binary but some other package building Wesnoth depends on seems to be broken. Information about where to get the respective binaries or how to get them work you get on the Linux binaries site for the Linux binaries. Download links for the other supported systems will be listed at the downloads page once the binaries are available.

As a fallback you can also get the sources from http://files.wesnoth.org/ - you should first try to get files through SourceForge to help us save bandwidth.

Soon we will shutdown the 1.3.15 multiplayer server because we want to focus on getting 1.3.16 tested. 1.3.15 and 1.3.16 are not compatible due to even some more (hopefully final) balancing changes. The server for 1.3.16 is already up and running. So consider doing an update as soon as possible. We want to wait with shutting down the old server until the MacOSX and the Windows binary are ready but once they are out we will shut down the old server.

By now the add-on server already offers some content that should be completely compatible with 1.3.16 (and the upcoming 1.4). If you encounter any problems with content not being working as expected, please notice the contents author, most of them should be here in the forums.

If you find any bugs don't hesitate to report them, but please read the instructions on how to post bugs first. Instructions for bug reporting can be found at http://www.wesnoth.org/wiki/ReportingBugs.

Enjoy!

PS: Within the next seven days anyone asking when the binary for xyz will be ready will be banned and the post will be deleted. Such questions just disturb the developers and packagers and don't do any good, so better not ask them... And bugreports in the forums tend to be forgotten. So better follow the guidelines and report them in the bugtracker.

gentoo does not provide a binary. But the ebuild is in the tree.

I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to plug unofficial builds into the official thread...

He's a developer if you didn't notice ;)

And besides, our Mac packager is unresponsive now so even though this build is still unofficial, there is no reason for us to pretend it doesn't exist or to ignore it as possible fallback option. This might or might not change according to feedback from people using it on various platforms.

What is it that officialises a build anyway? Is it being actually done by a dev, or just approved by one? Just wondering.

So that picture/post comparing him with Kane was prescient.

Uploading them to Sourceforge I guess, so that would mean approval from someone with acces to project site there. The build needs to work on all reasonable setups for target OS (on mac that would probably mean working both on ppc an x86 under all popular versions of MacOS), needs to ship music, art and translations, needs an installer and needs somebody willing to debug and fix all the issues that might pop up after relase (like with 3.12 MP problems under windows) in reasonable time.

Bear in mind that all above are just personal observations and thoughts how it should (and probably does) work. There is no formal procedure in place for this and in the end it all comes down to what Ivanovic decides to do as a relase manager.

somebody mentioned that 15 and 16 are not compatible (or something like word compatible..)..

what would happen if i installed 16 over 15? i did it..

and i had some oos when i was creating the game (during the game), but when another guy hosted, it was ok..

i wanted to keep the old settings.. so i installed over.. is it normal or i should delete and reinstall to have everything running without out of sync errors? in case of reinstall, how can i keep the settings? friends? which files can i copy paste..?

thanks

Thanks =)

enclave: As i understand it, generally you should not install a new version over an old version, as it can cause just the kind of OOS errors you're experiencing. I'm not sure if there's a way to persist settings across, though.

For people that would like to help develop/improve future windows builds : here is an alternative exe (with dlls it might depend on) that I'd like to get wider feedback about. I'm interested in anything that in your opinion differs from official build in terms of stability and performance. If you encounter a crash, try to describe what led to it and see if it's possible to recreate it. Help is deeply appreciated, and might help avoid another disaster in 1.3.12 style ;)
