Artwork for Free Goblins Faction.

Post by irrevenant »

It belatedly occured to me that I should be working on the art for the Free Goblins faction ([forum] [wiki]) here rather than in the Faction forum given that most of the artists who could offer comment are over here. :)

Here's what we have so far:

Revised Kemmist

Post by irrevenant »

mr_svperstar wrote:It could be just me but I think the potioner looks cooler than the kemmist, maybe the level 2 could just have a better uniform and a bigger bottle rather than two small ones? Or maybe his arms are out to far, might need bigger shoulders or something. I dunno, just think it looks wrong somehow.
Huh. To me the Kemmist with his funky goggles looks considerably cooler than the Potioner. His arms are bodgy though - that's one of my earliest works and it could use some revision.

Here's a revised version. I'm still not entirely happy with the arms, but I think they're better. He looks a bit buff, but I kind of like that. It makes sense given how physical a lot of their work is (grinding powders etc.)

[EDIT] And here we have my first ever from-scratch body (I borrowed and tweaked the head). The Free Goblin Hunter.

[EDIT2] A hacked together Guard Tower - far from ideal, but it'll do for now. I want to start getting this thing implemented.

The Hunter's VERY twisted round. Either his legs need to turn towards camera a bit, or his body needs to turn away. Try to move your body into that position, you'll realise why it looks so odd... The torso and arms by themselves and legs by themselves are both good, but they don't work together.

Well that's good - it means I only have to create two new half-units rather than two full units. :)

[EDIT] Nope. I see where those legs are pointing now and, cool as they are, they're not suited to a base frame. :(

Thanks for the critique. I see what you mean - every bit I looked at seemed okay but it still seemed wrong. Turns out the bits are fine, they just don't go together.

No worries. It's very easy not to see the wood for the trees, particularly on posing. I always find it helpful (where possible/appropriate) to act out the poses myself. Sure, you look like a prat, but I find it helps me to understand where everything goes, what's comfortable and natural etc etc. It might help to take reference shots of yourself doing this with a timer camera, too. My computer's full of pictures of me in embarrassing reference poses

Maybe this would be nice to post somewhere for future reference, not only for wesnoth artists but for all aspiring artists out there (that have an internet connection and the knowledge of your gallery :))

Most of them are not much use to anyone but me, as i took them for specific bits of specific work. Plus, i took many of them when i needed them whilst drawing. And at a time when i tended to draw wearing pyjamas

If you do a search on deviantART, there's a LOT of good stock available there for pose reference, as well as places like sxc.hu (i think that's the link, anyway...).

Ok, would you mind adding this info to the wiki (I might do it myself, but I'm not sure on how to search for it on deviantart, so better if you do it)

The eyes on the potioner and ponderer are square, but i assumed you already knew that.

I'm too tired to look hard enough to give any better criticism, sorry.

I noticed that too, at first I thought he looked like he was terrified or something, but after some thought I decided they were supposed to be wearing spectacles, so dismissed it. Could use some work to make that clearer if so I suppose.

He is indeed wearing spectacles. At the time I found it really difficult to get that idea across with the amount of pixels I had to work with. Hopefully I've learnt a little since then and this is better.

Also, new versions of the Hunter with half-decent legs. Unfortunately, every time I go to shade them they end up looking like crap. :(

The turquoise of the hunter's vest seems a little bright to me, and...is the rest of his clothing all TC'd? Also, his left ear looks like it's coming out somewhere around his temple. With his head in that position, we should be able to see much less of his ear, if any at all. For the spook, maybe having the clothing one colour and the tattoos TC'd would look cool =D

I like the designs =)
