Wesnoths beggininngs
As a newer guy the game, (i love this game BTW) i was just curious to the point of wenoths making. Like, who had the idea, who got the idea rolling, and what made you guys decide to let it go for free? Seriously, i coulda seen this game in my local wal-mart priced in the range of 19.99-29.99. This game is very good, the best i've ever seen for free.(maybe better than some that have to be paid for)

Why free? Among other things, that's what makes most of people here cooperate.

The thing about wesnoth was it started free; it wasn't something we created, and then decided to release for free.
The fact that it was free, yet playable and fun, was what convinced us to make all these shiny graphics to back this up (This is what it originally looked like) :

Fmuñoz was the first guy with the guts to spend his time doing that, and many others followed his example.

I could see the software in a GNU/Linux distro being sold for thousands of dollars.....however the software would never have gotten that good in the first place if it wasn't Free, encouraging others to contribute.Blade332 wrote:Seriously, i coulda seen this game in my local wal-mart priced in the range of 19.99-29.99.

Wow, thoe graphics are bad lol, the game today looks a million times better. So, since it was free, it led to more people wanting to work on it, and make it better? Also, as of today how many people devote good amounts of time to it?

Yes, exactly. Actually because it was Free -- Free in that anyone could change and modify it and redistribute it, not just because it was free of cost to get.Blade332 wrote:So, since it was free, it led to more people wanting to work on it, and make it better?
We don't really keep track. We're more interested in what we can do to improve the game.Blade332 wrote: Also, as of today how many people devote good amounts of time to it?

Yes... and always there is something to do... I translated a campaign, it was a challenge for me... and I did it! Some months with external preassure with the question "How much money are you saying you're going to learn with that??"
Of course, I closed my ears. And the work keeps surprising... I still have the mouth open since I saw the elves in 1.1.9...
