It should be possible for any player to take on any campaign level no matter how much he screwed up in the past, instead of starting over. It's more balanced and interesting that way. Veterans should be a minor help, but not necessary, the way it is in X-Com.
Every scenario is possible to beat with only your leader - if you're lucky enough.
I'd like to see some replays. And I'd like to see them with multiple 4+ attack misses per game, too, since that's an expected element that I'd like to see how you guys deal with.
How about you upload your replays here and we can tell you what you did wrong. That would be a better way to start this discussion.

I even provided a link to Winzip.

Conclusion #1) He's too embarassed to upload his demos
Conclusion #2) He can't figure out how to zip files / upload .zip files
Conclusion #3) He'd rather comlpain about how the game doesn't suit his needs than learn how to play the game

Ok, here's a demo of stage 2.

I'm on stage 4 now. I only saved/reloaded once on stage 4, when a series of bad luck made my shaman miss both hits of entangle, and the last enemy, the leader, connected all 3 times on Konrad. I was just 1 turn away from winning, so I wouldn't let ridiculously bad luck stop my victory. I think I'm getting the hang of this. In fact, I think the recent stages haven't been as hard as the first few!

People, read that thread! It's an absolute scream!
Don't believe me? Here is a taster quote, note the bolded parts:
Higher Game wrote:I do have a great education, I know what a damn forest is, and people from GA are not idiots. I am taking world history this year, learning about the cultures of the world.
The book summarized all of Africa and Asia in a single chapter, and the Middle East in 2 chapters. If it was a significant region it would be getting the 20+ chapters Europe gets. I actually feel sorry for the Turk/Arab civs, they only get 2 chapters when they probably deserve 3 or 4.
The thing is I'm going to start to discount anything Higher Game is saying because of the other stuff I found in this thread.
The only civ that I see below the Arabs is the Mongols. A lot of Chinese culture (the little bit they had) was destroyed by their invasions. I learned 3 important things about China and Japan from school: The Chinese are evil communists and America is here to stop them, The Japanese attacked us at Pearl Harbor, siding with Hitler, and China taught their history to a single man, Marco Polo. America's Civil War was studied more than China. And for a good reason, Abraham Lincoln was one of our finest presidents.

I am not 11 or 12, I am 16. And I know that wrestling is fake. I know my history very well here.

If you were 16 when you posted that, that makes you 20 now and you still haven't learned, you still think exactly the way you did in that thread so I'm not too interested in what you have to say.

At least you haven't jumped on anyone for having a different opinion... yet.

You seem to have a very *ahem* specialised opinion, I know I thought Alpha Century wasn't half as good as you say it is but we'll leave it up to you to think about. People are 1) sensitive about things, 2) not idiots, 3) have different opinions, but then again trolling can be fun to watch :P

I must say, though, this guy has one thing going for him - he doesn't seem to take offence at anything anyone says...

Why not take your complaints to the guys who write high school text books instead? They have PHDs and decide that there isn't really much history in desert areas. :P

Lately I've been thinking of using trolls instead of grunts. Trolls have regeneration, which makes them very hard to kill. I know they're supposed to be a hill/mountain unit, but that regeneration makes them lethal anywhere. The Bay of Pearls stage is really hard with the troll masses that come out. Even if only 2 trolls attack, that's 40 damage at night, enough to kill just about anything. They can easily retreat and heal as long as there is enough backup for them. Maybe I should bring my mages. They're great at finishing off stuff, as long as no more than 1 enemy (sometimes not even that many) can hit them back, which usually means the one they're going after!

Also, I have come up with a total of *3* tactics on the mermen of that stage. First I could have them defend the 2 water bases near the encampment, and use my own guys to kill the bats, letting the mermen rest. Or, I could rush towards the cage near the 2 green controlled water bases and fight it out at the southern end. Or, I could go north and get the main cage and trident and then attack the northwest side of the island with the villages. Or, maybe a combination of these 3. I haven't decided what works best, since it's the trolls that usually finish me off.

And I try not to save/reload. I reload from the scenario beginning, but not in the middle of a match, unless I get insanely unlucky, like the grunt example in the replay there.

By the way, what are your thoughts on loyal units? They don't seem to get other nice modifiers, like intelligent or strong, but they are probably much cheaper in the long run.

This may just be me but once I start the save reload thing I keep doing the save reload thing. In other words I start looking for luck instead of improvement in tactics and strategy.

Why are you fighting Orcs at night in the open? :-) In order to kill an Orc (on a village at night even) you wore your troops down so when daylight came and the Orcs were -25% your troops were too injured and crippled to put up a good fight. Did I see this right - you lost your loyal horseman? He went red while attacking a Orc on a village at dawn (+0% for you) and you had no plan to cover him up? If it wasn't your loyal horseman, horsemen are expensive, why are you using a high priced unit like that to weaken units? That 23 gold (or 2 knights!) would have come in handy on Bay of Pearls.

You moved what looked like a high hit point ranger from the woods to a salient in the hills and left it to fight 4 units on it's own for 2 turns?!?! Konrad's on the front line *unsupported against multiple healthy units in the open* as a level 1? He's injured and you keep fighting with him? :-)

While all this is going on - your most powerful unit (Delfador) is running around taking villages or lurking in the background not killing orcs? Why don't you have a druid by now, and why aren't you using your shaman to heal units in the center instead of fighting at night on a far flank with her?

By the time your army (or what's left of it) is in the prime killing area it's dark and you've been flanked. The only areas you can effectively reach the enemy are in reality salients - areas where your units can be attacked from multiple positions.

I think I understand why you have runs of bad luck and the random numbers don't work for you! :-)

There will always be losses or trade offs. Just as you plan on losing units - you have to plan which units are OK to loose. For instance I've got to the point where I can win SoE with no losses but! It catches me down the road at either the Princess of Wesnoth or Valley of Death. In order for me to win SoE without losses I have to recruit/recall more units and take lots more time. I don't get as many advancements and don't make much money.

In the long run I do better if I risk the 38 point quick strong ranger (a pretty marginal level 2 unit) (and lose it) to break through on the island and let units with better traits get some Orc kills so they can advance and my magic users can move in and take on the undead. By putting some marginal units at risk I can have a beachhead on the far shore by turn 12 instead of turn 15.

While I'm putting my 38 HP ranger at risk I keep my loyal knight and mages and druid *and* Konrad protected until it's time to reap the harvest.

There is a thread around here somewhere about Zone of Control, you might want to read that too.

They never listen. Trying to convince people they've been decieved is much more productive than trying to convince the deciever that he shouldn't decieve people...

Actually, I doubt there is anything wrong with the textbook mentioned. It isn't biased; it just isn't intended to give a full history of the world. Rather, it is supposed to give a cursory history of most of the world and a more in-depth history of Europe and America. This is common in history texts. After all, people in the US care more about their own history and the history of the countries that settled these lands than they care about the rest of the world. I suspect the same is true of people in other countries - are people in China more likely to study African history, or Chinese history?

So, the problem is not with the textbook; it is with Higher Game misinterpreting the purpose of the textbook.

In that case, since they aren't even trying to decieve anyone, it should be MUCH more difficult to convince them not to! :P

I didn't think forum posting could make someone famous - leastways anywhere outside of the tiny niche they post in. This world keeps getting stranger every day.
Remember that guy who posted here a while ago who kept thinking The South Guard was the tutorial? That guy has a multi-forum reputation too. We're all just forum monkeys in one big inter-jungle.
