Using Leaders to Fight

Post by Ginger_Ale »

When I started Heir to the Throne, quite often I would just keep my leaders in the keep in the castle and I wouldn't really fight with them. Early on it was easy enough to win the game without them, and I didn't want to press my luck with them. As the levels got harder and harder, I started to realize I was using them more and more. Especially leaders like Delfador, Kalenz, and Li'sar (whom I had given the Scepter of Fire to - amazing weapon), who have great fighting capabilities.

Delfador - he's good for finishing people off, or taking out completely low to medium HP units
Kalenz - a good person to finish off with, or to use his magical 8-5 to hurt someone so others can finish off + get a promotion
Li'sar - she is amazing once she gets the Scepter of Fire. 16-4 can kill a great number of units, and if she doesn't kill them, others can come in for the kill. I used her twice in Test of the Clans on a sort of 'assassination' attempt against the far Southwestern leader, and won on turn 29 (of 53!) to earn me 1000+ gold in bonus. Her 16-4 attack won it for me.

I'll admit I didn't use Konrad that much - probably because he is the one that actually recruits my units, but also because I forgot to get that sword on the Snow Plains map.

So, is it a generally good idea to use your leaders to fight? When needed, or as part of your main attack? Is it worth the risk to have them attack other units?

My logic is to use unleveled units early on, so in case enemies start attacking you, your leader will be high-level and could withstand those attacks.

You only need Konrad to recruit for 3-4 turns (less for some maps, more for maps like Bay of Pearls). Once he's leveled, he has an awesome amount of hitpoints and great damage. With the fire sword he is even stronger.

I think if Konrad is still L1 at some point we'll have a little hint to start using him more.

Maybe at the beggining, when they are at the port (is it blackwater?) Defaldor should say:

"Konrad, you may be needed in future battles. You should gain some battle experience."

Then, if he is still level 1 at a certain level:

"Konrad, you have not learnt much. Why not gain some battle experience? You may need it."

You NEED to move Konrad in Httt. And on multiplayer, using or not your leader efficiently can be the key of victory.

By move, do you meant the normal move, or level?

Probably both since the second requires the first.

Both. Anyway, having a leveled up Konrad helps a lot.

I usually recruit 3 times and send him with the second bunch. Works good.
I speak what's on my mind.

Which is why nothing I say makes sense.

When Konrad levels up, he also gains "leadership".
If such a leader stands next to another unit, it will fight better.
So you can improve the performance of your fresh troops a lot,
even without Konrad fighting himself.

In dwarven doors you need to have Konrad leveled up.

And leadership is important.

Bad strategie. Just throw him sometimes in the battle. He can be very strong, most of all with scepter of fire + fire sword. Well, don't expose him too much, of course.

I just have one serious problem with the tactic: I tend to, at some point, let my leader die after succesfully fighting (and gathering XP) for a few turns, and then discovering I didn't save it before a point where I could save him.

But then again, I hardly am good even if I like to think I am no noob either :)

I hardly ever use Konrad to fight anymore. I used him in the first few levels, but once he became a lord I simply kept him behind my main line and used him to whore leadership.

+50% damage is ridiculous.
