Faction of Sentient Wasps/Hornets?
This is way out there, but I figured I'd throw it out into the mix anyway. I do not expect this race to make it very far, but it'd be fairly original (or so I'd hope)
How about a race of sentient wasps? "Bee men" of sorts.
Obviously lots of piercing type damage (remember that Wasps don't die when they sting a target; bees however do die on a sting), and some sort of weakness to fire. Most likely inherently magical in some way.
(Wasps don't survive long in heat--it's actually how some bees kill them--they surround a wasp and then heat the area with their bodies and movements until the heat kills the wasps but doesn't quite cook the bees.)
Some of the basic troops would be like:
Larva (no ranged attack)-> Worker (can have ranged attacks in some trees)-> Wings fully develop (better movement, less armor??)
I was thinking of a sort of "behemoth larva rider" as one of the mounted units--where a fully-developed worker rides on top of a gigantic larvae, which matures as the unit levels. An odd idea to ride
Obviously a leader would be the queen. Drones could be scouts and you could break a lot of the biology to make it fit the idea of a fantasy ruleset.
Close family unit, matriarchal, feudal system (perhaps a bit more common-good oriented than most feudal systems!), very warlike.
I have no idea how far this would fly. *ducks*

Long answer: You might want to don a flame retardent suit along with your wasps. Not a bad idea per se, but it will likely get lots of "not wesnothish" responses.
Short answer: If you want to do it do it!

Call EP and offer it as an idea for his Monster's Era.
It will likely be the case that such Era will take much time, if it comes to cirth.

Well, a faction of huge, intelligent insects has been proposed before.
I actually think it's a great idea! But I don't think bees should be it. Strange as it might seem at first, I think termites might be the best choice.
See, warrior termites (unlike those of most other social insects) come in various types. Some have huge mandibles, some can spray acid, and there are others...

So like a kind of Super-drain ability? Like the blood and organs of your foes actually heals you. Sounds cool. One of the reasons I like this idea so much is that its not just another kind of Elf. (i mean sure theyre cool, but really)
Freedom is the ability to say one plus one equals two. When that occurs, all else follows.

the entire faction should be dumb and get hit a lot but they have strong armor with decent speed, you could have ants as lowly ground troops and they could have an ability that they prevent the enemy from runing because they are mindlessly trying to kill them, like an extra powerful version of a Zone of control and the ememy has to focus on finishing the fight before runing. bees would have an EXTREAMLY low everything but have a one shot kill move with a 40% chance hit no matter what, wasps would be better versions of bees but lose the 1 shot kill in favor of poison, ants have the ability to burrow under ememys so that you can strike them from behind. the race should be cheap and swarm tactics should be about the only thing you can do. the Queen would be the only person in the whole race with anything resembling intelligence. like the Zerg in Starcraft
