Method for making Chain mail
In all existing (wesnoth) graphics, AFAIK, people have used a chessboard-style pattern to try and simulate chain mail. I originally attempted that with the following unit, but people commented "he looks blurry..."
And I remarked... yeah, he does. I believe the proximity of the dark and light points causes them to blend together - this is, after all, the very principle of dithering, which allowed the ancient macs of yore to simulate a whole range of grays despite their monochrome screens. (their 72dpi resolution was, at the time, unheard of).
Not to mention that the colors I had, which were closer than black and white, to provide shading, multiplied the effect of the blending.
So, I did a bunch of work on this, and believe I have come up with a solution. I am surprised at how much brighter it makes this guy look, actually. In any event, I would like your critiques and comments.
Also, this may be a very good demonstration for anyone else wishing to do chain mail.

I just tried it
and it works and looks great
but it´s difficult to use the same colour cheme when the unit is moving and the amor gets folded

Looks great.
The edges still blend in with the background, it doesn't have enough of an outline.

It's all fun and games until someone loses a lawsuit. Oh, and by the way, sending me private messages won't work. :/ If you must contact me, there's an e-mail address listed on the website in my profile.
It looks like you stretched everything by 1 pixel in the vertical direction. Is that the only thing you need to do?
Hope springs eternal.

Actually, I think it is important for the white strips to have a lighter bottom, and for the dark strips to have a darker bottom. The tops of these strips must still have a lot of contrast, but less than the bottom parts.
This makes the tops blend a bit, and thus adds dimension to the sprite. (at least, that's my theory). Without it, it looks less like a material, and more like a pattern of white and black rectangles. Also, I set it to "hard light" blending in photoshop, and blended it over the previous work, which gave it the correct lighting.

BTW, thanks, everyone, for the comments. I didn't expect such a volume of them so soon.
