New sprite proposal : Orcish shaman

Post by benj »

I'm working on some scenarios featuring orcish hordes. I need some more units, including orcish "mages", so I made a new sprite for it. Any comment or suggestion is welcomed. :)

Note this is my first attempt and it is not finished yet (it still looks too human for me).

Yeah, you're right in that it looks too human.
Darken the robe (bloodstains?), hang some bangles on the staff and reduce his height, you'll be all set.
Talk is cheap, I know, but you've drawn so much that the rest is just minor, IMO.

Maybe you'd also like to post it on Pixelation (http://pixelation.cjb.net) and ask them what they think :)

Right, I did some modification to the shaman. In fact, I'm not satisfied of its dress. Perhaps I'm to make a new one more looking like the following : http://museums.ncl.ac.uk/flint/images/shaman.gif

Better, but the face seems to blend with the robe... make it lighter like the other Orc faces.
Fate is like an unpopular restaurant in which odd waiters come and give you things you didn't ask for and don't always like.

Nice for me but trully rather big O would make him 3-4 pixels smaller, and 1-3 pixels thinner (generally sprite not only chara).
It is nice though now too dark (his face should be lighter too, may a bit greenish shade of his skin). Laso make his robe a bit torn and add some bloodstains :)
And surely go ask at http://pixelation.swoo.net :)

Now I get it

Doesn't quite feel right yet, and I stared at the last image for 10 mins without realizing what felt wrong to me.

Then I thought it was the same as some bonus material on my LOTR DVD: Orcs are rather more about being "bent" with stored energy like a spring. Bent arms, curved swords, standing on one knee, etc.

The shaman is well drawn, and looks a good spellcaster, but is too "straight".
The assassin is a great example of this. Both knees bent, one curved sword pointing up, one pointing down. This is what's been bugging me, not the size.
It all looks so clear now that I see it...

I really like the 1st version (light robes)
You could curve his staff a bit.
Also rename him to .. witch-doctor or something as the name "shaman" is already took :-)
If I have time I'll try to edit your image a bit-
Nice work-

Here is the third attempt. I made only small changes to the image and reverted the dress color to original color.

Maybe I will change a lot the look of this sprite.

PS: you need to do 15 posts in pixelation before submitting artwork. :?

Well twoj things to say:

1. Brief through pixelation and give decent C&C to posts of your choice.

2. You can post in Community forum :) When you reach 15 posts you can ask admins to move your thread to WIP/Finished section.
