So, what do you think?

I think evil is best embodied by goofy looking sins of artistry that look like the [censored] stepchild of a failed squaresoft sprite game after it walked out of a gay disco.

New bat graphic:

Post by Jetrel »

Moderator's note: The language used in this post uses language intended only to cause dissension. Posters are advised to use more productive phrasing.

If you don't like this, you're insane.

There is no possible way that anyone could ever mistake this for another unit - the only thing we need to do is to distinguish between different bats in the same line.

This is intended as a higher end of the bat spectrum, so to speak. I don't really care if bats are limited to level-1 or are allowed to go to level-2.

I just care that that damn purple abomination is buried.

If you want a game full of colorful, sparkly units, sure. But for the love of [censored] god, don't tart up the UNDEAD. Let, at least, the undead be scary and serious looking.

:D

a slightly lesser bat, in red, and a very miniscule by comparison bat in grey:

Though I have obviously suggested this color progression, others might work.

I like the revised versions. The basic gray bat is still cute, though (but less Hello Kitty than the current one).

[sarcasm] Of course the bat should look silly. After all, the one thing necromancers are NOT known for doing is raising up swarms of bats to seize villages! [/sarcasm]

Seriously though, while I would prefer something dark and sinister, the two in your second post are rather bad, IMO. The first one is good.

The concern regarding grey looking like the stoned condition is valid - perhaps brown would work better.

Like what I have attached:
--------

Regarding the comments above - why yes, it was intended to sow dissent. No offense to francisco, though - as all can obviously see, I borrowed 95% of the shape of his sprite.

I simply have a deep contempt for the comical appearance of monsters in games like most of the "classics" sold by SquareSoft. Sadly, games that can keep a straight face in their unit art are a frail minority.

Fortunately, 95+% of Francisco's art is well within the realm of the serious - else I would not be arguing this. Hell - if all the units looked like the ones I'm trying to replace, I would never have joined this project, and likely wouldn't play this game either.

Also, a darker version of the red one above.

I like the spikier, scarier shape, but I think purple would be a better color.

Hehe, personally I like 'em all. It'd be kinda neat if bats were random colored.

you can do get 2 different bats by using genders. People will probably think they're two different kinds of bats unless the colors are close together.

If there's going to be 3 levels of bats, I think this is good:
L0 bat: undead-small-bat (both variations for two genders)
L1 bat: undead-bat-red, undead-bat-darkred (two genders)
L2 bat: undead-bloodbat

Purple bats uncomfortably remind me of the evil Pokemon bat. Nothing is worse than that abomination.

Spiky wings = cool
I want a more dark brown bat at lvl 0, or black (the colors of real bats.) Let's not make them too strangely colored before they start advancing.
