Re: Goblin Pillager
Monroid, Jetrel:
I suggest to do the hit animation more vertically accompained by a big jump. For the flame...this is a old try. There are more nice flames on other topics:

http://forums.wesnoth.org/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=28991
but if you want, let me explain my fire trick, for let to everyone to use it for some porpuses like this animation. But first....let me see the southafrica tournament.

Re: Goblin Pillager
Yes, rhyging, I'll make the motion pretty much like that, and the wolf will turn a bit to the left so the pillager has more space to swing his arm in the correct direction
That green fire you posted on second place is really well done, and ok, I'll wait

Re: Goblin Pillager
Hi monroid. Seems I promise something. There is my fire trick. This can be aplied/adapted for various porpuse, maybe with some limitations. For this "turorial" I will try to transform the sword of wraith in a magical fire sword.
1- make a mask. This must to have the form you want. In this case, must be more or less like the sword. Note that have a outline totaly blur, specially the up zone.
2- draw the flames in a pixel art. Their size will affect posteriorly the animation. So take a look at the image to have an idea of an standart size. Also we must to decide the colour and appearance. I use some Photoshop filters, like brightness and others.
3-Make a vertical tile of theses flames to make the bucle of animation. Why verticaly? because fire expire to the bottom up, isn't it?
4- Aply the mask we make on first step to this tile.
5- to emphasy the brightness we can make another layer like the image.
6- Make the animation moving on every frame only the tile we make. The mask must be anchored. The must to move 1 or two pixel for every frame. The result you can see below.
7- As aditional work, we can make a diferent reflex that the fire produce at its nearest things.(not in this tutorial)
As you can see, with few work, we can a good FX. Hope be useful!

Wow, it's so simple once you tell us how you did it.
I think I'll try using this trick. Maybe.

Wow, I haven't seen those other threads. I'll just chip in and say that your effects are amazing! I don't really know any special tricks in photoshop and I certainly wouldn't have conceived of anything like that! so thanks for sharing.
As for the Pillager, rhyging5's swing looks good. I'd do that but with the wolf turned around a bit too as suggested.

That's all there is to it? Wow.
Thanks a lot for showing that. The idea of just scrolling repeated copies of the fire vertically.. seemed... I just assumed that wouldn't work, but obviously it does.
Excellent. Now I know how to put that trick to use.

Well, learning is a constant process. Even the best of the best learn new tricks and methods now and then. And I really must compliment your ingeniousness, ryging. I'd never had thought it could be so easy to produce something that looks so awesome.

Great! More nice tricks to show us. Other good artists should also give some general tips of success to the peanutters.rhyging5 wrote:jajaja! every step you take.....I have take another...........never win this race
Re: Goblin Pillager
Shouldn't this go into a sticky tutorial? Just so it's not lost in the forum later on?

Re: Goblin Pillager
Rather than a sticky, I added it to the wiki ([wiki]Fire Animation[/wiki]). It's exactly the sort of thing I feel should be put there. I also tidied it up a touch (I hope you don't mind rhyging5, you have very good English considering it's not your native language, all I did was fix a few words here and there).
