Wagon overhaul

Post by artisticdude »

I was originally posting this in the art workshop, but I wasn't getting a whole lot of critique there, so I decided to move it into the art contributions since at least one of the mainline campaigns uses this sprite. I think I've got the general form laid out, but shading the canvas is turning out to be harder than I expected. Any comments before I add the wheels/driver/horses?

Honestly, we'll see how this goes, but don;t hold out too much hope for mainline with this. Thus far it's simply too... perfect... It looks more like a technical drawing or blueprint than a real item.

I second my previous suggestion that a pack horse might be better and easier to animate than a wagon.

How could I fix that? It might just be because it's unfinished (though I doubt that would really affect your judgement much).

I'm not really sure if a packhorse could carry all the silver the wagons are supposed to be carrying in TSoF, though. Even if, as is very probable, this sprite meets the same fate as all my other attempts at mainline (utter rejection), I'm sure someone can use this somewhere. But I'd like to make absolutely sure this won't be mainline-worthy until I give this thread up. Anyway, here I've added the horses and wheels:

The horses will be better if they match the size of the new mainline horses, not the old ones.

And the script can be edited to match the artwork, if necessary...

Is it just me or does the cart seem to be done in a different style to the horses? The wagon seems to be rather "clinical" whereas the horses look more natural.

Wow, those new sprites are really cool (how come I've never seen those before?). There aren't, by any chance, any sprites of the new horses without riders? I could (possibly) erase the riders, but my art 'skill' might not be sufficient.

I'll tell you what, I'll do a packhorse as well. I know that my chances of mainline-quality are nonexistent (as much as I hate to admit it, my username is a joke :( ), but, like always, perhaps someone can use it somewhere if it's not good enough for mainline.

Perhaps it's because I haven't finished shading the cart, and the horses are just placeholders until I can add the new mainline horses.

Don't worry - we all have to start somewhere. I was here for a year or so IIRC before i started submitting to mainline, and that was shadow updates.

I don't think he was offended. About the horses though, the horses in those sprites are warhorses, wouldn't just old horses pulling a cart (which might even be mules) be smaller then strong thoroughbred warhorses?

Depends. Have you seen the size of a carthorse? They're about the biggest sort... Making it a donkey might work though, i guess.

I've only seen one horse in real life, and I was relatively small at the time.(I also jumped into the next stall from being runover by it, so needless to say) I stay away from horses whenever possible. That does make sense though, having to get that much of a workout all the time..

[offtopic]Maybe I just read the tone incorrectly.[/offtopic]

I would have assumed that it would have been carthorses as you would need something that big to carry silver. As TSI says they are very big. Some are nearly as tall as an average person.

No offense taken, usr-sbin, sorry if I gave that impression. :)

A couple summers back I was vacationing in Maryland, and there were horses around the estate. These horses, which I'm assuming must be average sized, were at least as tall as a full-grown man. An since there are only two horses vs a heavy wagon, a heavy driver, and who knows how many pounds (tons?) of silver, I'd think these horses would have to be much sturdier than those a farmer would use to haul hay to the market. And since they belong to the king (in the TSoF scenario), these horses would naturally be better bred than your average plow-horse.

At least, that's my reasoning.

Just noticed a few stray pixels around the wheels, will address that momentarily...
