I was hoping for more tentacle instead of more body. I would love to see a mass of tentacles and an open, beaked maw, rising from the sea and obscuring its body, rather than a fatter cuttlefish.

Somewhere between cuttlefish and tentacle of the Deep?

I wonder if you could get one unit to level into multiple instances of another unit...

Now that is a cool idea. You could certainly do it. Maybe like this: level the unit into a dummy unit, and use an event to kill any instance of the dummy unit and then spawn your multiple units in the same location. (How about an enemy magic broom?)

The cuttlefish's movetype already limits it to water, IIRC.

WRT the melee animation: i think it would look a little better if there was some change of shape in the body, as well as movement. The back half looks a little wooden at present.

Otherwise, it looks great :D

I hope such unit would never go out of water. Because on land it would look strange. So maybe make cuttlefish-behemoth as L3 for cuttlefish line and kraken as L3 for tentacle from the deep line?
The Kraken is only used as a level up for the Cuttlefish and only in the Dead Water campaign and only for one specific cuttlefish. This seems way too specific of a case to worry too much about it, or try too much to change it.

That's more than necessary as far as I'm concerned. The Kraken is the level-up for the cuttlefish, but only in my campaign. Tentacles are only level 1, and would have to level up individually anyway. I wouldn't let a kraken go out of the water. Currently though, the cuttlefish is not confined to the water, and can even move in mountains and forest, which is a bit silly.

Right now. If it had good graphics it would probably go into mainline and show up other places. Also, there will be a few of them in my new campaign.

OK. So now I finish cuttlefish, then I'm going to work on kraken which will be more wisible than tentacle from the deep but less than cuttlefish. Probably something blue-greyish coloured and without shadow. This will be a new project in art contribs. And when I end this I will try to make proper L3 and L1 units for cuttlefish line. This will be in art workshop just for my personal fun unless somebody wants them in mainline campaigns.

Finished melee animation. More or less. I need to add shadows under unit and I have to figure how to draw the artifacts of rapid movements. And I have to design a death animation and sort of floating/standing animation. But most of work is done already. Below is an animation of melee attack and a simulation of in-game attack-defense sequence.

Looks excellent. if you can post the frames for what you have now, we should be able to get it in at some point soon. We can add extra bits than as they get done. I'm not sure, but we could probably get away without motion blurs on the attack frames - they would simply get too busy, i fear...

Uploading whole set. Added shadows. Now I'm working on death frames. I don't remember if unit attacked by whatever means always displays defense animation? Even if it cannot retaliate? If yes I think I should make death animation as a continuation of second defense frame.
