Re: Cloud's animations

Post by thespaceinvader »

Something that bugs me about the throwing animation: he's gripping the spear the wrong way - when I'd throw a javelin, I'd do so with the back of my hand outside, elbo down, knuckles up. You seem to be doing it the opposite way, which feels really awkward. I knew something was bugging me about it...

That's because I'm not working on the grip at the moment. I'm just putting the javelin in front of the hand to make sure it's aligned properly - something I'll fix once I'm happy with the blocking. I probably should have explained that earlier but totally forgot I was doing it

For the NE base frame: If the dwarf had javelins in a quiver (Which dosen't seem right, wouldn't they have them strapped to their back?) wouldn't their points be facing down like arrows in a quiver?

I was aiming for something a little like this:
Image
(taken from Mount&Blade)

Points up as it'd be easier to quickly get one out and throw it. In a quiver again for ease of access. Both because it's easy to portray a quiver and hint at there being serveral spears there than trying to physically draw every spear.

Comprehensibility > realism. Most arched would have waist quivers, and probably stick their arrows in the ground in front of them. But general public perception is of the back-quiver, so that is what we use.

A little rough around the edges at the moment, but here's the Guard's ranged attack with shading. Some of the shading I'm really not that happy with at the moment, but I thought I'd keep a progress report.

Also - what was the full opinion on the most recent NE frame tsi? Anything I should be looking to change before I move onto the NE animations?

Put it up to remind me? But I think it was definitely getting there. Ranged is looking good, btu I still can't shake the feeling that he's holding the javelin with his palm down, and throwing it underarm...

Not sure how I can correct the throwing issue, I shall have a fiddle and see what I can do.

Try putting just a little bend into the elbow - even if he doesn't seem to be stretching back as far, it might seem like the lower arm is more upright.

EDIT: here's a kickback on the guard ne. Tried to define the buttocks a little better, and make the quiver stand out a little more (it was very brown, otherwise), and define the nearside thigh a touch better. Very minor edits throughout. I wonder whether we couldn't find somewhere to put a touch more TC, too...

You might be able to shoehorn in some tc at the bottom of the javelin quiver, first thought was to put it along the rim at the top, but it would probably mix up with the headband.

Hopefully fixed the issue with the throw. If it's looking good I'll touch everything up and post the frames.

I've also made a few minor alterations to the ne frame (lengthening the quiver and a TC strap for those oblivious to the obvious). I'm not sure the strap works for TC, but the quiver was proving tough to do nicely.

I think that ne frame is a go to animate.

Thinking about the throw, the only difficulty I can see, and sorry cos it's one I really should have caught earlier, is the feet - he doesn't finish with his feet in the same place they started, and he doesn't step back into the original position, he just glides...

You've corrected the arm issue nicely though - however, I wonder whether it wouldn't be better if he also held the spear more towards the head - currently it's very front heavy, and it's difficult to throw like that.

Cool, I'll get to that.

Oh, good catch, I shall correct that. I was thinking it looped nicely without the step. It's the front leg that should be rooted in place, not the back

The spear position can change fairly easily. I shall make the changes mentioned, clean it up a touch and post up the .pngs

Going to need a new recovery frame, but that aside here's what it'll look like:
