Faction village flags

Post by JLS »

Well, I've taken my own sweet time about it, but I finally have something to present. Lamentably, it isn't much: a single frame of a Rebel flag. The additional frames should be pretty straight forward, but I thought I'd present it now to see if any changes need be made before I continue.

I had a hard time following the top–left to bottom–right wave as on the Knalgan flag with this style banner, so I eventually gave up. :annoyed: I think the flags vary in style enough that it doesn't matter as much, and that a longer banner will be blown differently than the short Knalgan one.

Some in–game shots (taken from The Elves Besieged):

The crossbar needs a little work, and the top could possibly use a change. For fun, I tried making the pole a little rougher with a split top (like a very straight, worn branch), but then realized that this flag would be used for Mermen too, which might look strange. I am still a little concerned that it still doesn't look fluidly fabric–like enough, but maybe the other frames will fix that illusion.

I have some ideas for the Northerner and Drake flags, too.

Please share your thoughts.

Longer and thinner would look better - it took me a moment to notice that there was any difference from the Knalgan one apart from the hammer head on top, and these should be instantly distinguishable.

Yep. Like, twice as long, half as wide.

Sorry for the late reply. Longer and thinner it is:

It's a little rough, just thrown together to get the idea. Closer to what you're looking for?

Maybe should be a little thinner still, it looks very large at the moment.
Back when i did the Loyalists and Knalgans flag (and my attempts at Northeners and Drakes flag to) i made a conscious effort to make all flags look very different but cover roughly the same amount of area.
I did this to make sure that no flag looked more important then the other.
But wait for Jetryls word on if that is something worth considering.

The length looks about right, but it's still too wide. You could probably stand to lengthen the split, too.

I agree with TSI on longer split.
And maybe there could more "ends" (hope you'll understand what I mean) - let's say 3? I dunno if it is OK for Rebels, but I thought of adding more variety to the flags.

Nice idea, makl... this flag is too thin to have more than one split, but it could work on another flag...

Two billows instead of one would go far.

By this I mean, it only bends in the middle, such a long flag should have more than one ripple?

Perhaps it should have a less dynamic normal position, and save any indication of movement for the animation.

QFT - this image won't ever be seen still, so wait to comment until it's animated...

Well, at least I play Wesnoth with most animations turned off (as I’m using a tired laptop), so a neutral flag pose would in fact look less strange. ;)

(What is QFT by the way?)

Probably one of the frames will come out reasonably neutral...
