just wanted to chime in and tell you how much i like your orc villages! :)

only the snow on the roof of the round one still isn't convincing, i think the colour of the roof and the snow are too similar to differentiate the two materials and i can't see a reason why it should stay up there at all and not fall down and pile up around the hut.

Snow can cling to quite steeply angled surfaces...

that's a real pic? no photoshoppery?

i stand corrected, but i still think roof and snow need more contrast.

That's shopped. The dead giveaways is the horizon being totally different. However, from a lifetime of experience in a particularly snow-hammered region of the world, it is a pretty realistic depiction of snow. Snow will bunch of up roofs depending not so much on the angle of the roof, but more on how well-insulated the roof is. If the roof isn't well-insulated, the snow will melt from the heat inside the house (and this is generally a pretty bad sign of energy wastage, since heating around here can cost almost $900 (maybe around 450€) per month in the very cold months of winter). Another minor giveaway is "tut", which might be short for "tutorial" in the url.

But we digress.

Yeah, now i look at it, that s pretty obviously shopped. However, I've seen distinctly real ones looking very similar...

Pretty sure this one's real...

However, Jet makes a good point about the insulation of the roof. That one seems to be made of canvas, which isn't exactly well insulated, and has an open smoke hole in the top, through which hot air would be travelling...

Thanks. Most of the non-black snow-covered surfaces I've seen have a solid (though often uneven) coat, and I'd figured snowflakes wouldn't just roll off even if a big clump could. But the insulation & smoke-hole thing makes sense.
How's this?

When show first fall, yes, this is true, but the stuff does tend to fall down in the days ahead, especially with brief dips above freezing like you will see during most of the winter in my part of the world.

It also depends on the type of snow. The wet snow that falls when it's barely cold enough to snow will cling to everything, but the dry powdery kind that comes when it's really cold will blow loose with even the slightest wind and will easily slide off roofs and such. Most pictures you will find are of the first type, because it covers everything and is very beautiful. The powdery stuff is a lot like sand and forms drifts, dunes and bare spots all over the place, and isn't nearly as photogenic, but it is very common.

snow can pile up quite high, more than one meter isn't that unusual: pic1, pic2

those huts look really gorgeous (maybe a bit more snow on the big one would make them look more consistent?)

These are looking great, and feel very much like Wesnoth buildings. I really want to commend you. If I could say anything, I would say maybe the snow on the roofs could be a little more clump, or have a little more variation in height, and the snow shadows could be bluer. Did you sample the blue used in the mountains in your image? Because the shadows don't look that blue. All in all though this is great work.

Very nice. Even if snow might realistically cling to a steep sloped surface, making it the way you did breaks up the "neatness" of the pic, which IMHO makes it more immersive and interesting. Thanks.

You know, those look basically there to me - maybe slightly bluer shadows, but they look great as they are. I'd be happy to see them committed in this state =)

doofus, your villages are absolutely wonderful! I like how they fit Wesnoth style houses. Hope to see them in game soon!

Thanks. :D
JustinOperable- I sampled from the snowed hill village.

I'd prefer not to mess with them anymore, if possible.

What does need messing with are these fortifications. How's this?
