He could stand to come a good deal further up in frame, perhaps. And maybe shrink a touch more too.

EDIT: also, sentinel sketch. Heavier armour, a more interesting helm (which still needs the scarf tying around it) which is designed for additional protection without obscuring the face too much, since wesnoth dwarves don't like that, and a fun beard.

Nice beard on this one. :)

For the helm, are the bars supposed to meet at a point and center on his nose? They seem slightly off, which I know seems to be because he is turning his head, but I feel that the bars would follow the movement. When you turn your head you do not really move your nose much, that's all.

They would, but they're also a few inches in front, and motion parallax means that they appear to one side.

However, I don't think i've put them far enough across, actually... Reference.

Ah, got it. Indeed, I think it is the fact that they appear to be sitting almost on the face instead of even slightly out in front. Just my thoughts.

About the griffon rider, i think there shouldn't be any reins. Griffons are sapient creatures and the flavor text says that the riders bond with/befriend the griffon not train/tame them. I'd imagine steering consists more of 'now turn left' than yanking on reins. There's also plenty of feathers for the dwarf to hang on to anyways.

That's why the rein is not designed to control by discomfort, as a horse's bit can be, but to control my communication - you tug on the rein to tell the gryphon where to go. It would be quite difficult to do it by sound when you're flying. It's quite windy...

The gryphon seems to have bird feet. Aren't gryphons supposed to have like cat feet? And is that a muzzle? I may be wrong. Other then that I like it! :)

AFAIK gryphons have paws and claws ;)
Also, I believe that it is TSI's port of a horse's bit over to an avian's head. Looks fine to me :hmm:

Anyway, good work! I'm liking that guard portrait.
Something about the rider's right arm feels odd to me, though--It doesn't really look like it's bent, for some reason. Maybe shading will fix it, though :hmm:
Great job! Keep it up! :)

Hi,

Edit: nice bars in the following post, not obscuring the head at all =)

Thanks, bye.

[edit: i must add his armor is excellent :), sorry for forgetting that in the first place...]

The Gryphon has bird front feet, head, shoulders and wings, lion hindquarters. The headgear is based on a falconry hood, albeit with the eyepieces cut out. It's somewhere between the barding on the Master, and nothing much on the Rider.

Sentinel lines/flats. I think this guy may turn out to be my favourite of the dwarves so far =D

The helm bars aren't actually obscuring it enough - the original design of the helm sends them right down to the bottom of the face, but I had to leave room for the beard. I've cleared it up a bit in this version.

Is it intentional that his gloves don't match? I can see why it would be like that, he needs more armor on the exposed hand. Just looks a little odd. (personal opinion here, I think.)

I love how the armor looks. Looking forward to seeing this one shaded. :)

It is - the plated glove would be exposed, where the other would remain behind the shield at all times, hence there being no need for armour on it. If that's not how it works in reality, though, I'm happy to armour the other hand too =)

Also, Guard had shading on his face.

didn't we just talk about it doesn't matter much to wait another day till committing after doing some changes... so please - wait.
the lord is fine now, the fighter not. actually i can't see what change you did to the rear eye - the rear eye still looks up, his right one looks straight ahead. please fix that. thanks.

but on to the other new dwarves! so much nice stuff again!

the guard: i still like the basic design very much :) but you didn't fix his right arm :

the gryphon rider: one of the most complicated portraits compositionwise... as turin mentioned they aren't based on the same plane. how about just the head of the gryphon showing up behind the dwarf? the gryphon looks a bit wonky atm, the way the legs connect to the body (and their size, that little tail etc.) aren't convincing. the dwarf looks like a little pirate to me (but that's no bad thing at all). but the dwarf looks radically different proportion-wise than the rest of your dwarves - his fists are the size of this head?! again, i really love the expression of the gryphon, but the rest of the pic doesn't work as well yet.

the sentinel: really, really nice design again! i think the foreshortening of the front hand is a bit much, i'd decrease its size a tad. and the face isn't really parallel to the hemet's front piece.

keep it up! but you're really getting to fast for me to keep up commenting....

-----

arg, you posted again while i wrote this... thus only a quick note on the guard - less yellow light and a f***ing other light direction! :P

I'm not sure quite what you mean about his right arm o_O

The rider needs a lot of thought - i'll probably leave him for now - I like the basic layout, but the execution is off at present. I was aiming for the piratey look, though =D

Further update with a little more shading for him. I've not fixed the light on the face yet, though. I did try of a more interesting light angle, but I always get a little wary of not illuminating enough of the image - particularly for this one, she shield face needed some light.

I'll redo the fighter's eye again. Stay around for a half hour or so, i should have something for you.
