Helpness

Post by Lilyann »

Hello, I have some free time and I would like to help you with the game's art!

Please tell me what do you need help with because the lists are kind of confusing and they don't seem to be updated.

Hard to judge. You mostly show rough sketches on your blog.
The art itself doesn't look bad but the portraits for Wesnoth need a certain amount of polishment to fit with the rest of the set. and a slightly different style.

Do you have some further examples. :)

1] It's assumed from what you've shown off, that you're not interested in doing pixel art - if you are, there are a number of things that could use help, there. Tell me if you are, and I'll cover those.

2] We could use two things for the main game - story screens for campaigns, and portraits. If you wanted to start on portraits, many of the orcs (such as the assassin line, the bowman line, etc) are wanting for decent portraiture.

3] However, these need to be in the same style as the rest of the game.
This is probably the big issue; we can't just accept any old art, even if it's good. Right now, we're transitioning away from looking like "a bunch of random crap thrown together" - which is an easy pitfall for OSS/Indie games to fall into, because avoiding it means you have to say no sometimes to contributions by skilled, well-meaning people.

Yea, I'm not interested in pixel art but I would like to make portraits.

What do you mean by "story screens"?

Do you have some of the pictures on the net? because the game isn't installed on my computer.

I think I'll try one portrait so you can see if it's fine.

Images that are displayed during the cutscenes while the story is being told. Here's some examples, note that most of it is pretty old.

Look at the ones in this thread before drawing portraits. They need to be in something that fits with this style:

Ok,
Is there a list of options so I can pick one?

Sure http://www.wesnoth.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=20897
But the mages are being worked on right now so something else from the list.

Edit: and i think the fencer line is being worked on by Sgt. Groovy.

If you want to work on story screens, we do *not* have a list of needed story screens; except for one particular image - a "ship caught in a stormy sea". If you're doing story screens, and you want to add them to the global collection, please look at this thread and try and inspire your style based on it:
http://www.wesnoth.org/forum/viewtopic. ... 64&start=0
Otherwise it'll only be suitable for some single campaign.

Very good sketches, but your Orc looks a little too "high-class," in my opinion. He's got high cheek bones, a (very) long neck, and elegant eyebrows: all hallmarks of elves, but somewhat out of place on an orc. Wesnoth orcs are generally represented as nasty and brutish, with short, thick necks, dull piggy eyes, and pointy teeth.

I think the orc could be adapted with only a stronger features and back, seeing how he is jut a bowman.

I never though about adding some Indian-esque cues to the Orcs.

Orcish archers are half-orcs: neither the large, brutish true orcs of the Grunt/Warlord type, nor the small, weakling goblins. The orc portrait given by megane should be a good reference, except perhaps not so large IMO.

But they grow into big grunt sized orcs for their lvl 2....
