Wolf Rider portrait

Post by Girgistian »

Here it is. I'd mainly like to know if even the style is at all acceptable for a portrait, but other kind of advice is of course also welcome.

wow, great first try :)

the style is good, but the pause is a bit too dynamic...

not good for dialog...

The round goggly eyes are not as realistic as the aim for portrait styles. That aside, the technique looks about right, though the pose, as Boucman suggests, is not ideal for dialogue.

True, I exaggereted a bit with them. The original aim was to make him look scared.

You definitly succeeded at that, but as said previously it's not suited for a profile pic, though someone could definitely use it in a campaign.

To me it looks like you've got some skill. Try to take inspiration from the latest portraits, work with the artists and I guess you'll see some of your pictures going mainline...

The technique is good end proper, except that shading doesn't bring out the 3-d shape properly, especially on the wolf, which looks sort of flat. Try more defined shadow/highlight difference.

Right, thanks for everyone. I'll try to remake this someday when I've got time. Probably by the end of this week anyway.
As a last question, does the rider look too much more like an exceptionally ugly elf or is it goblinish enough?

Perhaps if the head were a bit bigger in comparison to the body he would like more like a goblin??

Looks plenty goblin-ish to me, but i'd maybe go with equipment of a little lower quality, with less metal - the goblins are the worst-treated members of orc society, and as such, don't exactly have the pick of the gear.

one small remark...

the wolf looks very agressive, wich is sort of weird...

when a dog chases its tail, it's always playfully... the hostile look of the wolf looks a bit out of place...

I know, I thought about it when drawing it but couldn't seem to make it look good that way. The new version being finished, and the wolf in that one doesn't look aggressive. Even though it doesn't chase its tail anymore.

And here we are. Thanks for all the advice, I tried to keep them in mind while drawing. Hope this is good enough.

Wow. That portrait is full of character. I imagine people will want to discuss anatomical details (the wolf's head is a bit cartoony), but the basic idea and character is excellent.
