Desert elves (UtBS)

Post by emdot » March 16th, 2008, 2:10 pm

Hello,

I am the original author of colorization of desert elves for UtBS. Now I am rarely browsing forums but noticed this topic:

http://www.wesnoth.org/forum/viewtopic. ... 054#230054

So I rerun script to create desert elves from latest svn.

There is one problem with file names. Sometimes as "female separator" is used + sometimes -. Don't see any rule so I didn't change anything. But just copying files with modern names to proper folder of campaign don't fix everything. There should be some cleaning - either in file naming scheme or in configuration files.

The point of that thread isn't just to update the old sprites, it is also to make them their own units rather than recoloured wood elves. Most people wouldn't wear recoloured forest clothes in the desert, would they?

Yes, we're trying to create new sprites; however, these will be useful as a stopgap until we're finished, I guess. They're certainly superior to the current ones.

And I'm the one who started work on the new elves (the ones that aren't just recolorings of the wood elves). This doesn't mean I have to stop working on them, do I?

If not, I'd certainly appreciate help on them.

No, the maintainer specifically said he didn't want simple recolors; however, there's no reason to stick with 1.0-era recolors when 1.4-era recolors are available and unique sprites are not.

By that you mean that we can use these elves as an interim solution while we finish the main sprites?

One problem with that plan is that there aren't desert hunters in the package.

Well, make sure you get the hunters and all other unique lines done first, so that you can use these temporary elves along with the gradually-added new desert elves.

I like that idea. Now we just need Mist to approve it.

Hmm, I don't think current elves look particulary bad, I think on the other hand that putting in new recolors will probably make hunters and hero sprites look ugly and out of touch with the rest, that's why I'm still leaning rather against making new recolors. If you update unique units first and that includes :
*Hunter tree
*Desert Horseman
*Kaleh sprite
*New sprite for Nym (based on work by Karo?)
*New sprite for Zhul
*New sprite for Garak
I'll have no objections against putting in recolored elves as temporary(!) solution.
Somewhere, between the sacred silence and sleep.
Disorder.

Oh yeah, I think this was why I dropped out the recoloring idea some years ago. 8)
