I've made a small animation where he sticks the banner into the ground. I was hoping that perhaps it would be somehow possible for the banner to just stay with the halo while the Captain himself strikes the target. Which is why I put the banner to the Captain's back in the current version of the attack frame.

It is possible with the current animation system; the banner and the captain would have to be separate images during those frames. Basically, different animations can be played concurrently; this is actually what we internally use for missile frames, but the basic system is general and can be used for oddball things like this.

Assuming that it can be done, I've separated the Captain from the banner:

The shadow of the weapon should probably be changed on the defende frame as the sword is in front of the body.

Ranged frames. To be used with the banner.

:eng: As requested, I wanted to show by example that your swords need to be cleaned up. Straight objects like this should generally have long straight runs of similar-colored pixels; partly because the color on them is uniform.

Your sword consisted of a random spatter of pixels, many of them black. Black can work as an outline, but when it creeps inside the borders of an object, especially one understood to have straight edges, it looks grainy and strange. Like the sword is growing whiskers. Now, it -is- true that you can have a little bit of randomness in your arrangement of colors - metal will often have bits of strong specular reflection on it, reflecting the environment around it, but you were way, way the heck above the level that's appropriate. In my attached image, I illustrate the right way to shade a sword like this.

:augh: Also, holy crap the transparency on this image is a mess! I didn't notice it before because the translucent tan sprite on a tan background looked opaque, but you really need to fix this. The entire interior of your sprite should be completely opaque, the entire exterior should be completely transparent. I suspect from looking at your technique that you used an anti-aliased tool to do this - don't use the paintbrush tool* for sprites. You've had some practice now, forming objects using the paintbrush tool, which can help some beginners** - now try and work on doing the same kind of thing with the pencil tool. (Note - I did NOT illustrate how to fix this in the image attached to this post. That's still broken, and needs to be fixed.)

*or more accurately, "only use it if you really know what you're doing", which you don't, here. Wayfarer has finally learned how to use it well on sprite art, but there really isn't anyone else on this project besides perhaps me that could. Neoriceisgood could probably learn to, quickly, but I doubt he'd ever bother trying, pixel junkie that he is.
** it can make blending colors between two things easier, since you don't have to go back to the pallette and pick new ones. When you're new to spriting, simply going to the palette and getting a new color can take a few minutes of ponderous work; much of which is spent trying to get a bearing on what the hell you're supposed to be doing. When you're good at it, it's like .. 2-7 seconds, if that (most of the time).

I've refined all of the Captain sprites. Please do point out anything I missed.

Assuming that the Captain can be considered done, I've begun work on the female archer.
