Apfel - Hi, I'm smelly

Post by Apfel »

firstly, hello, I'm new here :)

I dabble with digital art every now and then and it would be nice to be doing something productive instead of just doodleing zombies and throwing them away.

I apologize if I've missed it, your forum is quite dizzying to me on my first visit ( so much to read! ), but I can't seem to find what character portraits are needed. please point me in the right direction! :) and thanks in advance!

Have a look in the portraits directory in your wesnoth program files. Basically, anything that's not there is fair game, WRT portraits. Some elvish portraits are particularly needed, as there're a lot of elves who have dialogue but no portrait within various of the campaigns.

Or just play some mainline campaigns (of the latest development release) and see what major characters, which should have a portrait, don't.

Mm, that too. That's where i get the need for the elvish portraits - there are various elvish leaders in tSoF who still use sprite art during dialogue, not to mention the elvish rider line, various of hich have dialogue in tSoF and HttT.

I'd suggest that focussing on the commonly used mainline sprites for portraits would perhaps be better than doing ones which are only used in one campaign - most pressing IMHO would be the mainline elvish fighter line and the elvish scout line. The UtBS elves should have a totally different set of equipment etc as you can see in the current UtBS portraits.

There are a couple dark sorcerer portraits in some of the other campaigns - and some suitable for elven fighters. Also, bear in mind that the elf units used in UtBS were based on older versions of mainline units - most of which have been improved (or at least changed).
My current projects:
MP pirate campaign: The Altaz Mariners
RPG sequel: Return to Trent
MP stealth campaign: Den of Thieves

Thing is that i would suggest that all of the UtBS portraits probably ought to be com-pletely different from the maingame ones - it would detract from the immersion IMHO to have a unit living in permanent desert look the same as one which lives in a temperate climate. The current character portraits in UtBS exemplify this - less heavy clothing, lighter colours, desert gear and an overall leaner look.

Do note that none of those are recurring or otherwise noteworthy characters in the campaign (yes, you'll probably have Vecnu in most scenarios but he still never says anything which couldn't just as well be said by anyone else).

To help a bit, some abbrevations:

UtBS = Unter the Burning suns (with the desert elves)
HttT = Heir to the Throne (the "main" campaign, "forest" elves centered)
tSoF = the Scepter of Fire (a campaign featuring dwarves)

UtBS is kond of a non-standard-campaign, the only one using the desert elves. You may want to play (and create images for) some others first.

I say make whatever you feel like as long as you enjoy it. Some projects are of more use to the general game, but as long as you enjoy what you're doing then there's no reason to do something else. This will also help ensure that you don't get "burnt-out."

Take the above advice if you want to do something more useful to the game, but my advice is to work on what you want. If those two can coexist, that is fantasatic!! (For you and for Wesnoth!)

Agreed.

Don't get me wrong - anything that adds somethign missing from the game at the moment is great, and if you get inspired to do something that's missing, you should give it a shot. But some stuff is more useful than other stuff imho.

ah I see!

I was a bit confused about how the different campaigns were oriented.

I played through some of the first campaign ages ago ( a friend recommened the game to me so we could play against each other) and didn't remember what I played being particularly elfy, so I just went with the first selection that had elves on the main menu X)

but yeah, I'm not really particular, I'll go dabble through the main campaign again and see what's up :)

weeeeeeeeeeeeee

I started on that xanthos bloke so he could have a portrait for his 10 minutes of glory

and then I fiddled with chantal or something green and elfish with turbo slop arms and mega-cheese pose

but anyways what is the size of these in the end? I don't have a "portraits" folder as far as I know, I'm running the mac version

The mainline portraits are in your
[Wesnoth folder]/data/core/images/portraits

And for custom campaigns there must be a Wesnoth folder in your home folder, I dunno in Mac where it is, well if you find it the portraits are in
[Wesnoth Folder in your Home_Folder]/data/campaigns/[Name of a campaign]/images/portraits

cheers.
