Oooh. I like that. But i think it could do with something on the sides. Fins liek on a naga's head would look cool. Or maybe horns. Or ears. Something to protect the Drake's horns/ears.

This is a neat idea, and the faction-specific flags sound even more interesting.

The icons seem a little too large for the lines they fit on, though - any thoughts on shrinking them to the same size as units?

erm, they are within 72*72; but imo its better to be larger than human-sized unit sprites, because otherwise they might be mistaken for mecha units or something ;)

They are nice but maybe adding two crossed hammer would help to identify the Knalgan faction.
For the Drakes, maybe add some kind of flame in the background ?
For the Loyalists, it could be simply the Wesnoth icon (that shield with the two swords).
For the Rebels, some kind of bow and some foliage maybe ?

eg the drake helm looks like some scifi vehicle if you look at it the wrong way.

anyway experimented with backgrounds, not sure if its for the better or worse.

The drake one works well, but the knalgan one doesn't.

loyalist crown. 100% Au, SoF engraved, W on top.

and its annoying i cant use crosses due to NRIW. it aint a real crown when it aint got a cross :/

Don't forget Random! Random faction would also need another image if all factions are going to have crown-style images. Random leader could keep the original image.

I agree that the hammer in the background doesn't look good for the Knalgans. I also don't like the top on that crown compared to the other crowns, but otherwise I like it.

The drake helmet looks great, but does the shape fit a drake head? Looks more like a mask.

I'm not too sure about the Loyalist crown, something about it doesn't look quite right but I can't figure out what. It's not crown-ish enough, I guess. Maybe jewels? Think generic media stereotype of medieval helmets.

An excellent idea.

For the Rebels:
How about a crown or wreath made of interwoven branches and leaves?

The Knalgan one is definitely worse that way, I think. The Drake one looks fine but it's probably better without the flames for consistency with the others.

The ones you posted look quite good, however, I'm not so sure I like the style. Could you maybe try to do one in the Attack icon style? I think theat would look better, less pixel painted and more realistic.

Either way, they still look good.

Is this better for the Knalgan one?

I'd prefer it with no hammers at all to hammers which are visible through the eye-holes.
