Request: orcish/shanty village
We really should get a crude hut-like village in mainline for use as an orcish or just an otherwise crude village.
I'm thinking it should be something built of stone, with for example some kind of hay or crudely thatched roof. Would be nice to have at least a rectangular and a circular one as variations, and of course ones with for example different roofs would be most welcome.
Here's a few pictures which I think serve as good inspiration:

Anyone interested in giving this a try?

I am certainly willing to give this a try, but don't expect anything good to come of it.
Although... Wouldn't a simple edit of the swamp/marsh house suffice?
EDIT: Here's one. As I said, don't expect it to be good; it isn't.
Now, because I have no idea what requirements these things need to meet, I'll go see if I can find an idea somewhere. [/humorless]
...I really should've done that before I started, shouldn't I?

Well, quite frankly I think that looks surprisingly good. The thing that's wrong about it though is the size: it's a little bit too small when compared to the other villages. If you could enlarge it to be more in line with the existing villages, I think the final touches, if necessary, could be easily done by one of the art devs.Aitze wrote:
Of course, people like Eleazar and Jetryl could chime in on this as well.

Very much in the right direction, but there are two issues:
1] It's too small, it should be almost twice the size. You can actually stretch it in your graphics program and rework the details.
2] It's not quite crude enough.
I've really been in support of this idea, I just haven't had time to work on it myself. Rock on.

I like that it's cylindrical as opposed to the more square construction of the human villages...

I tried to make mine bigger by stretching it 150%. I think it looks okay size-wise now; and another thing I like about the larger version that was not intentional but rather a fun side-effect of the stretching is that the stones are more distinct.
However, stretching, as expected, made it lose quite some detail. It still looks okay in my opinion, but next to the other Wesnoth houses it still lacks a lot of detail. Of course, it's supposed to be a crude house, but still.
I'll see if I can change that.

- Small version -> stretched -> ugly detail on the roof -> shadow.

This house looks really good, but i think it is a bit to dark. The roof needs some highlights in the hay. The other houses stand in bright sunlight.

Great. Attached is what I managed to do by editing this.Aitze wrote:
I removed the blurriness, added some dirt to under the hut and added a chimney (which isn't very clear yet). I think this still needs a bit more shading on the wall, too.

Aitze: looks pretty good.
For a more savage Orc-style place some gnarled branches on the roof to hold the thatching down, and scatter rubbish/dirt around the perimeter.

Feel free to PM me if you start a new terrain oriented thread. It's easy for me to miss them among all the other art threads.
