Yes, that's a very, very important tweak to make animations seem natural. Everyone, take note. I myself simultaneously came to a similar conclusion with some recent emotive animations for frogatto - it looked wrong for the character to just go directly into the emotive animation; instead, it was better to do a single-frame "microexpression", often completely contrary to the overall expression, and only then dive into the actual animation. Granted, this gimmick could get overdone/predictable, but it's a great first step.

Ages later... I've finally committed that spearman animation he was talking about. Major lesson in this particular frame: your pauldron was dark, and it was dark because my original was dark, but as soon as he turned, that became incorrect.

Metal and shiny stuff dramatically changes it's brightness when it turns. In fact, that's the ONLY thing that makes it shiny. The helmet middle and pauldron should have been as bright as in this image:

What's the status on standing/bobbing animations at the moment? I tried blocking one for the fencer the other day to practice animation... would you be interested in a finished version?

i like it. what about faster moving sabres while the rest of the body moves with the same speed?

this is an idle animation, as far as i know subtle motions are better than extravagant ones. but ill let a pro give you a real answer.

@Atz, like the work, it looks well done. although the bottom right of his cloak (our perspective) looks like it disappears for a second.

is it an idle anim ? I though these were standing anims... (playing all the time vs playing randomly)

This. I would go to absurd lengths to kill Fencers if they were constantly bobbing like that all the time.

hahaha! of course its an animation that would make anybody crazy if it was there all the time. but from time to time, a swift fencer could do a little FAST trick with the sabres.

How can you not like bobbing animations. I love the work that Sleepwalker has done with saurians. It looks very cool in game too (tried them myself). It's different, takes some getting used to. But IMO it's a great addition to the game.

Personally, I like them. Love the tail wagging. :D The fencer one is pretty cool too, could a bit more movement though. :D

Standing animations, 8) :

Fencer standing animation really bothers me, though. It's probably that he's moving the swords downward out of sync with his body moving upward. :augh:
