please post them in context, just adding grassland as a layer below it would do, otherwise it is very hard to judge how they look in game (and anybody who really wants to see has to do it themselves, and unfortunately lazyness often wins out over curiosity)

I like the green ironstaff the most. It looks nice evil.

The modified armor which looks like it lies on the floor is better, but it may need some shadows?

IMO that's better because now you see clear that it's lying around on the floor. :)

Is it possible to add some more shading to those staffs, or are the images simply too thin for that? Right now they look flat and cartoony because there's little or no shading.

Since the image is very small, it may not help very much, and IMO they are good enough.
A bit shadow (no shading, shadow) would be nice, tough.
First read, then think. Read again, think again. And then post!

First thing which springs to mind is why can't we have them actually look like they're lieing on the ground.

EG.

They look okay, but why are there three? IMHO one magical ring would be enough.
