Revenge of the Rogue (User Made Campaign)

Post by zeth »

This is a Knalgan Alliance vs Northerners campaign.

Description:
After fleeing from an Orc horde, the former residents of a northern mountain city have been living as thieves and outlaws. Now under Edwin, the son of the last Steward, the ragtag group of outcasts are ready to retake their home.
It has 22 scenarios, three are story and there are some choices of where you take your army, therefore to complete the campaign means winning between 11 and 17 playable scenarios.

You can get it from the in-game add-on menu. Search for rogue.

This is my first ever Wesnoth creation so tips and comments are very welcome. Profile art for characters is also very welcome. Pull requests are very welcome:
Please let me know how you get on.

Hey, cool campaign! I've played the first several scenarios so far (campaign version 0.1.0, on Difficult).

General comments:

-In most scenarios you forgot to specify the 40% gold carryover inside the [endlevel] tag, which makes it default to the old system (where you get 80% carryover or the minimum starting gold, whichever is higher).
-I assume the level 5 Rogue Commander having 45 HP is a typo :P
-I feel like there are too many loyal units in this campaign. Loyal units are fun to have, but when your whole army doesn't cost upkeep it tends to cause balance issues.
-I think a lot of the scenarios would benefit from having scenario music. (Especially big battle scenarios like scenario 4).

Scenario 1 (The Pine Forest)

-Needs a turn limit, otherwise you could farm infinite gold/XP. Maybe 15 or something? (I finished in 12 turns.)
-The gold carryover isn't specified in the objectives.
-The fearless trait doesn't do anything for the elvish scouts because they are neutral.
-It would be nice if the loyal units had overlays to tell them apart from regular units (Sini, Vikki and later Karduras are missing the overlay).

S2 (A Different Meeting)

-typo in line 111: Its all just meat. -> It's
-Maybe tone down the difficulty a bit? 50 gold vs. 400 gold is pretty rough! (I barely managed it, with a bit of luck.)
-Note about the gold carryover: right now it's 80%, which carries over to the next cutscene scenario, which all carries over to scenario 4. So you start scenario 4 with 80% carryover + minimum gold. (So if you change the carryover to 40%, scenario 4 would need more starting gold to compensate).

S4 (Back in Town)

-typos in line 172: Lets storm the beasts while we have the element of surprise. -> Let's
-The turn limit seems a bit high - due to the large amount of villages, you get a massive carryover into the next scenario, and it also makes it so you could just occupy the villages and farm the orcs for XP at the end. (I finished turn 21/40).

Thanks so much for playing, amazingly useful feedback.

Yeah the balancing is something I need to learn, I tested it quite a bit on Easy and Normal but not sure how hard to make Difficult. The gold carry over needs a lot of work, I will follow your suggestions here.

These opening outside levels are trying to allow the player to level up some healers and human units like Thugs and so on, otherwise they are useless in the main part of the game and it a becomes dwarf only affair, but yeah I probably made them way too easy, I guess having them easy makes them easy to test but now they need to be tightened up a lot.

Good point about music, to be honest I haven't thought about it at all yet, as a player I normally turn the game music off and listen to my own music.

The other comments are very helpful and I will do those fixes too.

Hey, played the next few scenarios (5-8). Some quick comments:

-I generally found them extremely easy, partly because I had massive carryover from scenario 4 so I started each scenario with 300+ gold, but mostly because level 1 orcs are just no match for leveled dwarves in caves.
-It's very strange for the underground scenarios to have a regular time of day schedule; usually cave scenarios use the {UNDERGROUND} schedule, which is perpetually night. Changing the schedule to underground would also help the orcs and make the scenarios more of a challenge. (You could add some illuminated hexes to compensate).

-The maps tend to be very small and pretty bland - it's usually just one large cave room with you on one end and an orc leader on the other end. Most of the cave maps are just plain cave terrain, and I think they could use some more terrain types like mushroom groves, cave hills/rubble, maybe some chasms and underground lakes, etc.
-This is only an idea, but I feel like several of these scenarios could be combined into a larger scenario, especially since the story states that you're fighting one orc leader right after another. A larger cave map would also have more room for interesting things like branching paths and twisty passages.
-Maybe some of the orcs could recruit trolls too, since it would add to the unit variety and orcs and trolls often work together.

-Scenario 6 (Welcome Home) either needs passive_leader=yes for the enemy side, or more distance between the two keeps- I just killed the leader on turn 2 when he ran out of his keep. :P
-Typo in Scenario 8 (The Armoury) line 100: Lets deal with these Orcs and open it up then. -> Let's

On Wesnoth 1.12.6, with the Easy difficulty, made it as far as the Back in Town.Again scenario, turn 5. At this point, however, the game froze completely and I was unable to continue. This happened to me twice in a row. I am reporting it in case there ia a bug in the game. I should also mention that I am using an iMac on the Sierra operating system, in case this is a factor.

I also felt about three months ago, on OS Win 7. So I leave this campaign uncomplete, and then I'm off to play and have managed to complete campaign Genesis. :(
Sorry for my english, I'm not english native.
