Maps.

Map editor gave them without an extension, but forums stopped me from posting that...".map" should be fine, rename if you can't read it.

Thanks for the maps, I'll have a look at them shortly. BTW you can post maps on the forum using [ map ] [ /map ] (minus the spaces, obviously).

The sprites for the Noble/Lord/Chancellor line are based on some images neoriceisgood did quite some time ago that never made it into mainline - I took his images and made some adjustments and added animations. You're probably right about them looking too similar - I've never claimed to be an artist. ;) But until someone offeers to do some better ones they'll have to do. I certainly can't afford to spend any more time on them.

I'll have more of a think about Leaving the Mountains - maybe your map will give me some inspiration. :)

I've had a look at the maps, and they both have several ideas I do definitely like, though I'm not entirely convinced on either of them. I've converted them to 1.3.x format, and thought I'd post them here for others to comment on:

First, the map for the first level (Leader of the Drakes):

Thanks for the conversion. Will remember to do the conversion to 1.3 and the map tags - I remember seeing them once...

As said, comments would be appreciated, none of us are perfect, so help me move closer towards it.

MarkP: Can you tell me what parts you like and which you don't? I'm completely fine with improving or redoing the maps.

I'll start by saying that I think the second map has been modified too little. Maybe I should have started from scratch. Also the enemies encountered in that level aren't exactly exiting, I like scenarios where you fight a unified enemy, but I can't think who would possibly be camping right next to the drakes.

I can't find a way of explaining my point without being offensive, so I'll skip to the recommendation. In the Scenario: Bandits, please reduce the rediculous amount of gold each bandit faction receives. Facing a force 10 times your size which all has 70% cover and backstabs, is unamusing.

I like the second one more than the first. In fact, I've incorporated a slightly modified version of the second one into the campaign already. Don't expect to see it on the server any time soon though - real life is likely to take precedence for a while.

I've actually redone Leaving the Mountains completely (well, mostly) - the trolls and dwarves now come out of the caves (via different exits) at the same time as the drakes, and you have to defeat them (and some allies of the dwarves') before exiting the mountains.

The first map...I think my main issue is that I actually quite like the current one - I like the colosseum-type feel it has. And your map is IMO a bit small, though the current one maybe is a little too big. I do like your idea of it being surrounded by lava though. That could add to the stadium effect. Maybe I could even have the rest of the council watching from outside or something.

FWIW the current maps I like the least are probably the last 3. I think I was rushing through it a bit much by the time I got to there.

Actually, I'd like to completely redo the last scenario. It's pretty lame. Any suggestions are welcome.

Here's the version of the second map I'm currently using:

Thanks for the feedback. What level were you playing it on? I don't recall anyone else giving similar comments on that scenario. That said, once real life allows I am planning to play through the whole campaign again, as I've made some fairly big changes to a couple of scenarios. As above, that won't be for a while though.

Thanks again to all those providing feedback. Keep it coming! :D

As 1.4 is out know I'd like all campaign on WesCamp-i18n to move over to the new scheme as described here: http://www.wesnoth.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=18675

This campaign is one of those which should move, I'll merge the old translations of course.

Hello, I'm new here. I downloaded the game about a month ago, and only recently started playing. Just a while ago ran I across your campaign and thought it was alright. However, I was somewhat disappointed by the lack of its own graphics for story and characters. I've Read through some post found out you did not like making your own graphic, and I have been in somewhat of an inspirational drought for art. So thats is why I'm here...to show my drawings and see if they can be used. (I'm also surprised that this campaign is still somewhat active in development)

this one goes with the part that says
"For centuries the mighty dragons ruled the land. But their time is past. Their numbers have dwindled until only a handful remain, and survive mostly as a legend that no one really believes. However their descendants, no longer as awe-inspiring or as powerful, but far more numerous and much more intelligent, have been eking out an existence underground."
This one took no time to make, but it does not look the greatest either.

"Now, with their long-time leader dead, it is time for a new generation to take the reins. Through many challenges three potential leaders have stood out from their peers. All have different opinions on which direction the Drake race should head, but only one will get the chance to put their ideas into action..."
I thought that the council looking ominous in the background would be a nice touch...

I'm planning on continuing to make pictures for this campaign, and currently I'm using version 0.6. Please let me know of any changes that may affect what I'll be drawing.

Also I hope that it is no trouble that I'm posting images in here. I know that there is a place for art on this board, however I felt that it was more appropriate to post them in here, as my pictures deal directly with the campaign.

If you like it, let me know. :D

Children of Dragons

Hi BLM,

Thanks for the offer of artwork - I'm certainly more than happy to accept contributions! :)

I'm not much of an art critic though, so I would definitely recommend you post in the Art Workshop forum (which is designed for art contributions for user-made campaigns) to get some quality feedback. I'll start a thread there with the images you've posted so far, and you can just add to it.

What you've got so far looks like a great start - one comment I would make is that the Drakes don't really seem to look much like their sprites...that said, there's no rule that says they have to, so that's not necessarily a problem, just an observation - not sure how intentional it was on your part.

Anyway, thanks again and I'll add the link to this post once I've started the thread in the other forum.

Edit: here's the link

Looking back over the art, I suppose that you are somewhat right about the pictures looking not enough like the drakes sprites. However, looking back over the comments I got the impression that the sprites were going to be redone anyways, yet I still suppose that they probably do look a little to much like the saurians  . But again there seems to be enough there to make them drake  . Recolor/texturing is always a quick and simple solution to most problems; however, if most of problem lies with the actual drawing, that could be slightly more troublesome. The latter would mean digging up my original sketch work, imitating the poses with touch up in the needed areas, cleaning up the new sketchs, scanning in, recoloring, shading both light and dark for whatever color is in the area, and finally making the aesthetics of the picture work. Not that I'm complaining, I mean I do this for my own enjoyment, just that it is time consuming, and I have college to deal with. (so results may not be lighting fast) Sorry about the rant, I do appreciate your input, it is always helpful to see things from another's point of view.

About the second scenario, I see it as possible to replace it with dialog and character pictures as [story][part][/part][/story] with the emerging. I'm not saying that this is the best route, just that it is an option, and would like input on this.

I said way too much  .

edit: made some changes to the pictures. The horns now actually look more like drake horns!

Eh. I can't see the map. All I see are is a map tag and a massive bunch of letters...

Is it a problem on my side?

Nope, I think the map tag needs to go above everything else.

No, I don't think the code has been updated to handle the maps since the forum was upgraded. They'll get to it eventually. :)

I've just uploaded version 0.8 to the campaign server. In this version:

* Leaving the mountains has been completely reworked.
* Sea Journey has had significant changes made also, primarily the addition of villages both on the ship and in the water.
* Balancing changes throughout.
* Translation changes as requested by Torangan. I don't really understand how this is supposed to work, so if someone can let me know if it is working as expected that would be good. ;)

Known issues:

* The last scenario is rather broken. I.e. it's not possible to finish it. :) However as mentioned previously I'd like to redo it completely anyway. Unfortunately real life doesn't allow a lot of time to do so at the moment.

BLM, I haven't included any of your images at this stage, as from looking at the other thread you are getting some good feedback on improving them. Let me know if/when you're satisfied with any of the images and I'll work on putting them in (as time allows).

Hey everyone,
I just made this account to let you know that this campaign was a lot of fun. I'm in a hurry right now so I can't structure my comments, but here are a few quick remarks (I played the 0.8 version I believe, I downloaded it two days ago):
-The scenario with the ship was one of the most creative and dynamic things I've ever seen in a turn-based strategy. It gave the game a completely new twist (and I almost got to level up the captain of the ship to a Grand Marshall:) )
-One of the very small critiques about that mission was that there was only one kind of enemies for the most part (or am I forgetting already?). Sea serpent anyone? Now that I think of it, maybe adding some of those guys from the category "monsters" will really liven up some of the maps.
-On livening up the maps: the drakes' flying ability is awesome, but you have to admit that it reduces the interactivity between the player and the map, and that's why some people might think that the terrain is not that good. I personally liked it, but that's my opinion. Some people might want some more impassable mountains, esp. in the final level.
-Also, in the final level, it is already hard as it is now, but think a little how the terrain might add to the suspense and make the arch lich a little more glorified (say, by putting little "towers" of single hexagons of castle) so that he's not just some guy that lives in a cave, but an actual overlord of the undead on the island. Maybe two more small caves before that?
-If you're thinking about revamping the map where you land on the island (I found it a little easy at that point), maybe you could make it so the player starts on the ship which is anchored near the shore, and he will have to land an airborne assault on the undead who are waiting on the shore.
-The single width corridors rock! Do not remove them, that was one of the other maps that I really loved. It just allows for so great strategies (one unit is blocking the entrance while two others are healing in the nearby villages, etc.) It was an amazing map, and I found it a little hard to finish it in the time limit (if you're thinking about extending the time limit on a single map, maybe this one should be it. Although I liked the difficulty and the added pressure.) Again, do not get rid of the single width corridors.
-Healing my units was a big problem throughout the campaign... I had to load multiple times on every scenario (and with me being used to loading, beating the last scenario was a b*tch), and just backing off your units doesn't cut it. No lvl 3 unit can stand the focused fire of 4-5 lvl 2 units... I'm not sure how the following would help, but the only map where I didn't feel the need for a healer on the battlefield was the one in the caves, where the conflicts were isolated enough and the villages were always nearby so that healing would always take place. Oh well, I guess this campaign is just hard (even on normal difficulty).

I don't really have any suggestions on how to solve the problem with healing... As it is now, it definitely calls for a unique style of play, and that's not necessarily bad (also, this is the first campaign I'm playing since about a year ago, so I'm probably not appreciating the alternativeness of the gameplay as much as I should). That, and the severe difference in the drakes' performance during day and night.
-The last scenario is still freshest in my brain, so here's one more idea... Why not have a skeletal dragon appear very close to the player in the first round? I'm sorry if that sounds totally out of place, but I just checked out the units tree for the first time and feel like a kid in a candy shop.
-I just went through all the scenarios and the one where you fight against the two councilmen is arguably the one with the most undetailed map of the campaign. One idea: maybe instead of letting them recruit a lot of first level units, why not have them both appear with a number of high-level personal guards, but with little or no ability to recruit? Maybe one 3rd and two 2nd level units for each of the council members.

My apologies for the long and not quite coherent post... I'm still new to Wesnoth, and all those suggestions probably sound really lame/outrageous to you--don't hate please...
If I can be of any further help, let me know. I'd love to see this campaign enjoy more popularity, because it really deserves it!
//Offtopic: Oh, and one last thing: since, as I said, I'm new, if anyone has any suggestions about another campaign that I should try out (I've completed the mandatory Heir to the Throne in the past, and got a little frustrated with Under the Burning Suns' compatibility issues but enjoyed it too), please send me a private message. Thanks everyone!
