Well, it probably won't surprise anyone that I don't see 2 as being any different then 1. To add fuel to the fire (what you wanted a resolution to this problem?) consider draco
draco

\Dra"co\, n. [L. See Dragon.] 1. (Astron.) The Dragon, a northern constellation within which is the north pole of the ecliptic.

2. A luminous exhalation from marshy grounds.

3. (Zo["o]l.) A genus of lizards. See Dragon, 6.

from http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=draco
which also has the aforementioned Draco as athenian lawmaker definition.

Ok here is yet another real word that perhaps might satisfy all parties (except 3)

Draconic-X where X is warrior,scout, whatever...
draconic

\Dra*con"ic\, a. Relating to Draco, the Athenian lawgiver; or to the constellation Draco; or to dragon's blood.

I like "Draconic". The "ic" ending makes it "Dragon-like", without calling it a dragon, the word itself rolls off the tongue easily, and good lord what is that silver limo doing outside my window?

Nearly all units in the game have uninvented, boring, dull, regular old words as their names.

Why change?

I like Dragarian, but "Draconic" sounds more like elvish or orcish
that "The Draconic warrior ate the goblin" but not defined a word like elf or orc itself.

i believe one of the points of this thread is that just because someone else does/doesn't do something doesn't mean we have to or even can do/don't do that thing.

so, just because someone has a ''draconian' race that they made up doesn't mean it is good for us to. :)

we shouldn't make up race names, IMHO, when there are good names available.

Let's just go with "Draconic". After all, it's an apt adjective for them, and they probably have their own unpronounceable word for themselves. =)

Ok, call them 'draconic fighter', 'draconic warrior', just like you call elvish units 'elvish fighters' and 'elvish scouts'. but you still need a name for the race itself. the descriptor 'elvish' is connected to the name 'elf'. so what is 'draconic' connected to?

Ok. :)

but why not drake? :)

i jus think drake would sound better and be more recognizable as meaning 'dragonish'.

I'm not sure, Drake doesn't give me a feel of an intelligent dragon-like creature. altough I am planning to call a certain unit "Firedrake" because it is often confused for a small dragon thanks to its characteristic firebreath.

Exactly. Which is why Draconic is perfect. "Draco" = Dragon, "-nic" = Like a. It's a creature like a Dragon.

I don't think we need to worry about people not knowing that Draco is Latin for Dragon. They'll figure that out fairly fast when they see these guys.

Ummm. . . 'Drakian'

Post by Shade »

how about 'Drakian'. It stays true to the 'drak' part, without calling then 'Dragon X', and while getting away from our less than fine citizen 'Draco'. Or maybe, 'Draken'. . . Anyway, my .02.
