Brainstorming for Lavinian campaign

Post by turin »

I think it might be cool to have a Lavinian campaign.... I already have a few ideas.

You are Caius Regilius, a Tribune, of the province Silvia, located in the northmost reaches of the Lavinian Empire. You reside in the city of Silvium, located on on the river that flows into the Iceswept Bay. This is the height of the Lavinian Empire; but the Empire has overextended itself. The city of Silvia lies north of the mountains of Arendia, and is sandwiched between the Marauders and the Sidhe... war is inevitable, and the province of Silvia will almost certainly fall. This probably takes place around 300 BW.

(BTW, The province of Sylvia is similar to Britain, in that it is far removed from the empire, and there is very faint Lavinian presence there.)

Scenarios:

1. You are returning from a visit to Lavinium (the Imperial Capital), where you were giving your 5-year report. Soon after you crossed the mountains of Arendia, you are ambushed by marauders. You must hurry along the road to reach Silvium, which you fear may be in danger.

2. You were right - Silvium was under attack by Marauders. You must defeat them. You do, but accidentally kill their leader, a Marauder noble. (You were supposed to merely capture him.) Now the marauders want vengeance.

3. You decide to leave the province, bringing with you all people of Lavinian descent, a small group. (Those native to the region will not be enslaved by the marauders; besides, you don't really care about them anyway.) There is one other major city in the region, ____. You have to go down the river, to this port city.

4. Once you get there, you find that the city is surrounded by marauders. Your only hope is to either evacuate the city by boat, or make a mad dash for the Sidhe border. The Marauders, you think, will not dare follow you into Sidhe lands.

5a. You took the ships. The marauders were surprised, but soon manned their longboats and followed you. there is a sea chase; eventually, the longboats catch up with you, just as you see land - Sidhe land. You have to land the ships and stop the marauders from landing theirs.

6a. You have broken the seige of ____, but you are not home free. The Marauders are chasing you. You have to make it to Sidhe lands before they kill you.

TALKING. Once you complete one of the above scenarios, the Sidhe come in the dark of night (you're in their forests) and capture you, bringing you, your army and the civilians following you to the Sidhe court. There, you convince them that you are running away from the marauders, their enemies, and you are not invading them. There is a council of Sidhe elders; most believe you, but a minority does not.

7. The marauders are more foolish than you thought. They followed you into the Sidhe forests, and there they attack you as the sidhe are escorting you to the edge of your forest. The sidhe ally with you, but after their leader dies, the minority that thought you were an enemy takes over, and you have to fight both sidhe and marauders. You cannot defeat them; you have to run away south, to Arendia.

TALKING. You reach the safety of Arendia. Unintentionally, you have sparked a war between the Sidhe and the Marauders. However, the Marauders, realizing the folly of attacking the sidhe in their own country, soon retreat, and decide it is time to attack Lavinia itself. The stage is set for the final combat between the Marauders and the Lavinians.

CAMPAIGN END

Wow. I had more ideas than I thought. Opinions?

You know, I was kinda idly planning to do a campaign featuring the Marauders, or maybe the Sidhe, if my Celtic faction and the campaign I'm planning to make based around it doesn't work out, because they are the most celtic-ish factions we have, (though each of them lacks a bit), and are the best alternative. It would be called "The Fall of Lavinia" and center around...well I'll let you figure that out, it shouldn't be too hard. This campaign could actually make a good prequel to that, or my campaign could be a sequel to it, however you want to look at it.

Those scenario ideas are good, even though 7 scenaria seems a bit short. 10 is a good length in my opinion. This might be a good idea or it might not, but you could maybe fight some orcs? Or you could even run into a crazy cult of dark sorcerers, and fight some undeads...just suggestions.

Coul use a few more campaigns but its good, and the Sidhe part is good aswell... Who is this leader that dies... It would probably be an sub-leader controlling that quadrant of the forest

Hmmm... when the leader of Sidhe die, there should be a code put in to attack your guys more than the Maruaders if they have a choice, instead of splitting up... I know it can be done as it was done in UTBS

Why would the Lavinians go that far to enemy borders even when they know their doom in just being prolonged...

I thought that the Sidhe and Marauder's were allied. Ppphhhh, it wouldn't surprise me that the Marauder's would have a punch up with anyone they find :p.

Not much time to comment right now, but I want to mention, before I forget, that this is actually a surprisingly good name (If I am right). Because a silvia, in Latin, is a forest/wood, and the province is surrounded by (being north of the Arendian mountains), guess what? Forests (or at least very near to.)

I say more later.

Disto: Sidhe and marauders aren't allied - North Elves and marauders are. It would be nice to get a scenario in with the North Elves, if they get done in time.

Seven is indeed a bit short, but I don't want you to go on random tangents in the campaign. So, fighting orcs, or undead, or something would just feel out of place. Also, I want to focus on the factions in the Imperial Era.

In any case, I don't have enough time to write a long, epic campaign. I think a short, 7-scenario campaign could still be good, and it wouldn't be too much work. (Of course, if someone else wants to actually write the campaign based on this brainstorming, this objection will be moot. ;) )
The Raven wrote:Why would the Lavinians go that far to enemy borders even when they know their doom in just being prolonged...
The Empire extended itself too far for the same reason the Roman one invaded britain - to prove it could. Then, we could have some conflict between Lavinium and the outer provinces - the provincial leaders could try to convince the Emperor that trying to control that much land was ovextending the empire, but the Emperor wouldn't listen...

Yep, that was intentional.

Lavinian Campaign

Post by spun »

I am working on a Lavinian mini campaign right now. I lifted my names straight from HBO's series, Rome, although the characters are very different. You play Lucius Varinus, a Decurion who has been sent north to a backwards, unimportant post due to certain... indiscretions with a Centurion's daughter. Accompanying you is your friend Titus Pullo, a Propugnator. I have six scenarios planned, but one is just story.

The intro is played on a very large map, and consists only of Lucius and Titus walking from their old post to their new one and talking. When you get there, you see the men you will command. You have five legionnaires, 2 slingers and 2 skirmishers plus Titus the Propugnator makes ten men. You also have ten auxiliaries. You don't have to pay upkeep, but you can't recruit new men, either. Everyone on your recall list is placed at the beginning of each scenario, so you don't have to worry about money at all.

I will be varying the difficulty several ways. More gold and better recruits for the enemies, changes to the maps, and different traits for your men. I wanted to convey the idea that this was a dead end post for misfits, so I planned on using humorous 'bad' traits like weak, stupid, clumsy, sickly and slow. Harder difficulty equals more men with bad traits.

Scenario 1 is an attack on a town. The player starts right at the border of Aragwaii (what's left of it, anyway. The Lavinians have conquered most of it.) A band of orcs attacks the town, led by a mysterious figure (thinking of using Chaos faction for this, or maybe Marauders) The player has several decisions to make. Do we protect the Inn at the crossroads? Do we warn the independant farmers? Do we cross into Aragwaii to protect their town as well? Protecting the Inn gets you a thief who was staying their. Warning the freeholds gets you some hunters and woodcutters (from the Liberty campaign) Protecting the Aragwaii gets you a mage and a scout.

Scenario 2 is a hunt for the leader of the attack, who has fled into a windy river canyon. Only it turns out this is a setup, and the player is ambushed.

Scenario 3 finds the player retruning to their post, only to find it under attack. The whole thing was a setup, the first attack was only a feint to probe Lavinian defenses. Now the player has to flee with as many men as they can save back to a more defensible fort.

It turns out that the orcs of the wild north are being led by a new threat (either marauders or chaos, haven't decided)

Scenario 4 is a race to the castle, with new enemies popping up along the way. Everything looks lost as a large band of orcs appears between you and the castle, but a band of elves appears to help you out.

Scenario 5 is a big battle to retake your old fort. The player should be a centurion now, and is finally allowed to recruit new units.

I wanted to keep it short and simple as this is my first stab at writing a campaign. I've also tried my hand at sprite making, but I'm not really an artist. Anyway, here's a lavinian Ceaser (4th level, after centurion) for you all to laugh at.

As for your ideas, Turin, well, it certainly sounds more interesting than mine. Like I said, I'm kinda new at this. Were you looking for feedback on the scanrios as outlined, or were you looking to for a longer campaign and more scenario ideas? Also, has anyone worked on a map of the region? Because I have done a large scale map of Lavinia and surrounding areas if anyone's interested. (including a .jpg of it)

Rome

Post by spun »

Well, in the series, Lucius is a standup guy. Family man, great soldier, honorable, religious, etc., a real embodiment of the Roman Dream. Titus is a horny brawling reprobate. I kinda reversed that in my concept. Titus is the thoughtful one, kind of a Hobbes to his commander's Calvin. Lucius has always got some wacky plot to better himself, with Titus commenting on it sarcastically.

A quick question, I digitized some pics from the series, then modified them heavily in Photoshop to use as portraits. Can I GPL these images?

Pretty sure that's not legal. Unfortunate, really.

BTW, there IS a map of lavinia and the surrounding lands - look in the thread "Imperial Era". There's also a history document talking about, well, the history of the Old Continent. The world of the Lavinians is pretty fleshed out by now; it'd be nice if you could mesh your campaign with what we have so far.

I respect that you want to have rational enemys in the campaign,
but to me it sounds dull to fight the marauders for 7 scenarios and the sidhe for half of one. Monsters or opposing lavinians could be used to spice up the enemy list. And what about the Sylvians? do they every show up?
Feel free to PM me if you start a new terrain oriented thread. It's easy for me to miss them among all the other art threads.

Well, the Frost Elves could also make appearances as enemies in some of the scenarios where you fight Marauders. But other than that, there's not a lot of logical stuff to have... although maybe a scenario with the residents of Silvia (probably Marauders who have been persuaded by the Lavinians to join them - similarly to how some Germanic tribes allied with the Romans while some opposed them), or working those guys into one of the scenarios already described.

Also, in scenario 4, there could be something with fighting Lavinians who don't want to leave the province. They don't have orders from the Emperor or anyone to do so, and you don't outrank them, so they want to stay. You know it is suicide to do so. So, at the beginning of the scenario, you have to attack the city and defeat this enemy, without damaging the city too much (so no seige weapons). Then, the marauders appear in the middle of the scenario; the other Lavinians ally with you, IF you have already damaged them enough. Otherwise, there is a three-way battle.

So, it could be logical to have as enemies Marauders, North Elves, Lavinians, Sidhe, and maybe even Arendians (don't know how, though) at some point during the campaign. That's basically all the factions in the Imperial Era, and is in any case about as diverse than the enemies list in HttT. ;)

If my Celtic faction ever gets completed, they(or at least one tribe of them) could live there as the native Silvians, since Celts lived in Britain(which Silvia seems related to) before the Romans came, and there were still a few there during Roman times, though they got pushed to the borders.
Otherwise, you could have an Arendian tribe, since they are supposed to be "semi-nomadic", a group of them could have wandered up inti that area and be living there.

You totally need a campaign in which you are:

1. Repulsed by some elven magic.
2. Forced into some barbarian fighting (add adequate allies if necessary, that is Arendians/Dardanoi). Seems you already have this.
3. Find that your fortress/city/whatever has been raided, which forces you to start another campaign against the wrong-doers, which btw, are ORCS.
4. Mayor fights and/or special missions as necessary. Seems this is in too.
5. Great parade with the defeat of the Orcish menace, which would now provide Lavinia with a great show for their games.

Basically, i'm just asking for some Orc-punching in the middle. Maybe the Orcs of the city decided it was good day to riot in the middle of war?.

Orcish riots. Brilliant.

However, to do that well, we'd need the Orces Gentorum completed.
