Re: The Grand Tag! 2v2 Tournament - 3rd Edition!

Post by Dauntless »

It's me again, now coming with the organisational stuff.

As it's already the 3rd edition of the TGT, I'm sure most of you already know the basics, just for the safe side I will copy the rules from last years and emphasise the few things that will be different this year ;)

(Checking out the TGT 2nd Edition is certainly worth it if you are not familiar with the TGT as there is the full set of rules, a lot of funny things, action packed replay packs and it is perfect to get the general athmosphere of the tourney. The thread is found here: http://forums.wesnoth.org/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=32213 )

1. So what is the TGT? :)

(based on last year rules and putting important changes into italics)

- The GRAND TAG! is a wesnoth default era & settings (except Time of Day) 2vs2 tournament. this edition is meant to be played by 16 teams, grouped in 2 groups (Jedi Group and Sith Group)
- tournament is meant to be played on the latest stable wesnoth version
- check out The GRAND TAG! 2st Edition thread to learn more about the tournament

2. When it will begin?
- The GRAND TAG! will begin after the recruitment phase - that is since closing the team list (most likely beginning of September)

3. What are the general rules of the tournament?
- GENERAL RULE: have fun, respect other players & their time
- tournament will be played with the following tournament elimination system:

- after team list will get closed, 2 groups of 8 teams will be made by the admins and posted on the thread.
- winners of the Jedi Group will fight against winners of the Sith Group for the "Champions" title of this edition of TGT!
- match for a 3rd place is possible if both teams that will lose with the finale players will agree to play for it
- tournament is meant to be played on the newest stable version of the game, with default xp and map settings
- each team plays up to 3 matches in the round, winner of the 2 of 2 OR 2 of 3 is the winner of the round and goes to the next round with losing team eliminated from the GRAND TAG
- team cannot play using the same ip. adress
- subbing one teammate by the other during the game in run is NOT ALLOWED unless opponents will agree on it. Player that is subbed cannot spy enemy team and has to regain control over his troops ASAP
- teams are FIXED, but IT'S POSSIBLE to get 1 substitute player if it's necessary to play out the round, altough in the finale games, substitutions are not allowed
- if one side has technical problems, it has a right to postpone the game ONCE, to continue it after fixing the problem BUT the side, that asks to postpone HAS TO contact the opponents immediately and make an appointment to continue the game in the next 3 days and opponents are meant to find a time to continue the game during this period of time. After this period, if postponing team won't contact the opponents, it will automatically lose the game. It's lex specialis to the rule below:
- both sides can continue the match another day if all players will agree to do that.
- every round lasts 14 days and teams HAVE TO play the round games during this time. If they won't, they can be disqualified from the tournament. It's a superior rule. It means that teams can postpone the game, and every team has a right to postpone a game due to the technical problems, but it's all limited by the 14 days period of each round so think well before postponing.
- round period may be shortened if all the tournament players will agree on it.

5.What are the timer settings?
- 5:00 starting timer, +360s reservoir, +300s turn bonus, no action bonus

6. What are the rules about the maps & factions?
- everybody has to play RANDOM FACTION
- Time of Day has to be FIXED, so don't forget to turn off "Random Start Time" option. It's for sake of map balance.
- map for the first game of the round has to be chosen with mutual acceptation of the both teams, P1 team in the the 1st game of every round will be chosen via computer program that will randomize it
- map for the second game is chosen by the team that lost the first game, this team will also decide who will play as P1 team
- map for the third game is chosen by the winners of the first game, this team will also decide who will play as P1 team
- players may chose to play the tournament games from the following default maps:

1st Round maps:
4p Clash
4p Hamlets
4p Loris River
4p Paths of Daggers
4p Xanthe Chaos
4p Underworld

4p Castle Hopping Isle
4p Ruins of the Terra-Dwelve
*

2nd Round maps:
4p Clash
4p Loris River
4p Path of Daggers
4p Xanthe Chaos
4p Underworld

4p Castle Hopping Isle
4p Ruins of the Terra-Dwelve
*

3rd Round maps:
4p Clash
4p Loris River
4p Xanthe Chaos
4p Path of Daggers

FINAL ROUND maps:
4p Clash
4p Loris River
4p Xanthe Chaos

Important edit: Maps in italics are allowed to be played, but only if both teams agree to play on them.
Ministry of Wesnoth warns you: Some matchups on these maps may lead to painful death ;)

- modifications & old versions of the maps are NOT ALLOWED.

7. Rules regarding matches & forum
- teams are obliged to inform when they will play the game in this topic and allow observers to join their games. Games played in the tournament system has to have a "TGT" acronym, number of the game, number of the round & team that participate in their names!

8. Cheating & rules abusing
- cheating is not allowed, cheating teams will be banned from the tournament
- rules are never perfect, thus bona fides (good will) should be visible in team behaviour, if the team will find some part of the rules not precise , malignant behaviour will be punished by official warning. If the team will still act in malignant way, it can be banned.

9. Registration phase & Organisation Week
- Registration Phase starts today (28th of July, 2011), you can join the tournament sending me a PM with your team name. Registration message MUST have full nicknames of the players that will play in the team, it's forbidden to send a registration messages with only 1 player listed in them. Both players have to be registered on the boards to secure fluent communication between the teams! Because number of places in the tournament is limited, time of sending the recruitment message decides.
- this tournament WILL require small part of your time, so please be sure that you will have enough of the free time to participate without causing major problems to the other tournament players & host
- RESERVATION: if you want to play the tournament, but you don't have the teammate yet/you're unsure if your team mate will want to participate , please post in this thread OR PM me, that you're interested in joining & post in this thread - other players might be in the same situation as you're, this will also reserve you a spot in the tournament for 72 hours period.
- after Registration Phase will end (that is after filling all 16 team spots), Organisation Week will begin
- Organisation Week is, basically, a preparation phase of the tournament, during Organisation Week teams are supposed to contact their 1st Round opponents, set games for the 1st Round of TGT!, learn TGT! tournament rules and train ; Organisation Week is necessary to secure fluid start of the tournament rounds.

10. When we can start playing the games?
- after closing the team list, end of the Organisation Week & official announcement about beginning of the round 1 of the tournament. I (as the host of the tournament) will announce such things

11.Bugs solutions:
a)Movement points bug
- once in a while, when one of the players drops from the game due to technical problems & rejoins, may find out that all his units have 0 movement points, it's very serious bug regarding tournament rules, thus following procedure has to be applied when it happens:

Disconnection bug HOWTO:
tiboloid wrote:1. save the game
2. open another Wesnoth client and load saved game as a replay (check the "Show replay" checkbox at the bottom of the Load Game dialog box)
3. check the "Skip animation" check box at the top of the screen
4. run the replay by clicking on "continuous replay"
5. when you reach the turn of the side before the disconnected guy, click on "pause at the end of turn"
6. save the game and reload.
b)Corrupted replays from reloaded games
- It's a well known fact, that replays from reloaded games are usually corrupted and can't be watched. This problem hits particularly a high level games that tend to be long, thus probability of saving & reloading the game is higher in their case. Still, such a corrupted replay can be repaired:

repairing reloaded games corrupted replays HOWTO:
alpha1 wrote: From what I’ve figured, the corrupted replay bug is caused by the fact that the after-reload game information is stored in the beginning of the replay file and that wesnoth client fails to recognize that the pre-reload info (which is stored in the end of the replay) must be read first. So in order to fix the replay, those two parts must be brought into the correct order.

1. Extract the replay file from the .gz archive
2. Open it in a text editor (I used Microsoft Word 2007). There will be 2 pairs of [replay] [/replay] –tags. (The after-reload game info between the first pair, the pre-reload between the 2nd)
3. Search for the 2nd [replay]-tag, cut everything between the [replay][/replay]-tags and paste it into the beginning of the file (don’t forget to delete those tags afterwards)
4. Search for the [replay_start]-tags (there will be 2 tags if you reloaded once) and delete everything between 1st and 2nd [replay_start]-tags. (If I understand correctly, that is the game info of the after-reload) This way wesnoth client will not be confused by it and will use the game info of the pre-reload part instead
5. Add the edited version of replay into the .gz archive (you may need to download 7-zip, a freeware archive program, in order to edit .gz archives, which can be find here http://www.7-zip.org/)
6. Have fun

Enjoy !
- ALL players have to USE AUTOSAVE, if rehost from replay-save somehow won't help, use last available autosave & accept different outcome.

12.Other cases not included in the rules
- other cases not included in the rules & rules breaches will be decided by me, I want to play the tournament too so I urge other players to save replays from the games, post them here and observe other ppl games to secure maximum level of fairness in this tournament. I also promise that I will make a decisions in the best interest of every player of the tournament - if my team will need some form of GM decision, I will cede my tournament host rights to the other team to get a fair judgement. I also have 2 co-hosts which can rule out situations including my person :)

SO these are the general rules, in case you have any reasonable question concerning them, feel free to PM me or post on this thread.

Now to the changes not involved in the rules above. For the sake of higher attractivity of games, we have decided to reserve 8 slots to the teams who advanced from 1st round of the TGT 2nd Edition. This will enable us to see more top play games. This reservation period will take 2 weeks and after that, all the slots that remain empty - if some team doesn't want to or can't participate- will become open for any other players.
The reserved teams - if they participate- will also be put into the bracket fixedly to avoid them clashing in round 1.

This is prolly the essential of the rules.

The TGT! is really hard to manage from the admins side and it requires quite a lot of effort from us. So I would like to appeal to all players to:

a) consider their time restrictions before signing up - getting 4 players to play at the same time isnt always easy, especially if some of them have really limited time options
b) be active while setting the game date - from past experience we know its always important to set the date as soon as possible to have a reserve in case of some unexpected situation
c) be tolerant to one another, to the admins, respect the rules and the admin decisions - not everything can be treated in the general rules, so in those cases, the admin decision is final. We promise to be unsided

And thats all, let the registration phase commence now!!

For the TGT Crew

Dauntless

Even though the registration hasn't started yet, I have to make an announcement that Noob Leavers won't be able to star in this Episode due to RL constraints. The Leavers part may yet recombine with some other deadly element, though!

That is sad to hear grzywacz, I hope to see at least one half of Noob Leavers in the tourney.

Also I am opening the registration phase with the first applying team, Random Noob Gamers (Dauntless and neki)
Feel free to start sending your teams in, I will make a list and try to keep it up-to-date once the applications start to arrive ;)

Hello there! neki has arrived! Or was it "Carrier has arrived" ?! Nevermind, I just stopped by to say hello, to say how happy I am that this tournament started, how sad I am that now without Noob Leavers there will be nobody to stop us from conquering the TGT throne once more, the usual :)

And by the way, mr. organiser sir :), yous hould talk to Rigor to post an announcement on the ladder website ASAP, you should talk to Soliton (dev IRC chat) to map the tgt.wesnoth.org to the current edition and you should also talk to neki to make his next Youtube video about this awesome tournament. The third one I have taken care of :D, but you ought to talk to Soliton ASAP so he can change the mapping of tgt.wesnoth.org so we can start advertising the tournament in this form, not as a crappy random forum link.

Brutal cheers! :)

Agree with Caphriel. I would aslo add: Why hamlets and underworld? Lame maps imho. Bluewater and Castlehoping arent perfect, but sure more interesting than hamlets and underworld.

Ruins of Terra Dwelve - it's oversized and doesn't look balanced enough. TGT players discussed about this map already in 2nd Edition of TGT and (aside from couple of players) nobody wanted to play it. Also, it's sheer size (40x40) allows to predict that game on this map might take more than average amount of time necessary to play out any other map in this tournament.

Experience of the previous editions shows that some players, due to the time constraints or multiple other factors I won't discuss right now, have sometimes problems with playing any, even the least time consuming maps, under the tournament rules, thus taking all these factors under consideration + the fact that this map isn't popular and isn't recognised as a decent 2vs2 map, we've decided to not add this map.

Underworld - it's present on the tournament map list as a "lifebelt" for the matchups that struggle with some organisational problems ; if players , due to some random events, have limited time in which they can play out their games, this map is present to allow them play some relatively quick game instead of something "chunkier" like Loris or Clash.

Castle Hopping - isn't present on the TGT map list mostly due to it's structural imbalance - games are decided there in 99/100 cases by having a big battle on the small island in the center. Considering the fact that top 2vs2 players can launch very powerful attacks in their team powerphases, it's possible that one team would have to leave the center island of this map without a fight to escape a certain defeat in combat which would also mean that they would have to try to regain the control over it somehow, which is unlikely considering that such assault should've been made via bridges.

All in all, too much on this map depends on it's shape and ToD, thus we've decided to not add it to the TGT map list, neither in 2nd nor in this edition of the TGT.

If you want to discuss this topic furthermore, please contact us via PM, but provide some proofs like a decent analysis or good replays that would help us change our mind about it.

This topic isn't meant to discuss 2vs2 map balance, so let's keep this discussion out of it.

About the current map settings:

Im not a 2v2 expert so I didnt want to change the mapppacks much. The mappacks were made to include those maps, which are considered most balanced. From my own experience, thats definitely not Bluewater. Concerning Terra Dwelve and Hopping Isle, I dont have enough experience to competently add them in. You can contact the vice-admin Faello directly and try to arrange this with him. I will take his and alpha1s opinion into account.

P.S.: Faello beat me to reply to this by about two minutes, but im glad to see we have the same opinion on this matter ;)

@Caphriel Off topic: Just make sure you don't hop into a siege-tank while I am around :)

@Caphriel On topic: I have played one match on Terra with me controlling 2 sides, opponent controlling the other 2. Although fully focused I stood no chance vs. two lawfuls: Loyalist and Drake with my measly chaotic/semi chaotics: Orcs and Dwarves.

But to cut the balancing bla-bla short, I fully agree to what Faello said and I think we should not focus too much on putting maps in or taking maps out, as the current map-pack offered spectacular matches so far anyways. I think we should all focus in reducing the time required to play a round and reducing the number of games forfeited due to real life problems. Keeping fast maps in the map pack can definitely contribute to this.

I signing in as a free agent.

A little about me as player:
I'm on a break from wesnoth atm. I have this bet with my friend over 100 euros who's gonna do better in Starcraft 2 tournament, in a local LAN that takes place in 3 months so I'm kinda busy with that. The ladder rating does not show my true skill it's much lower at the moment.
Besides like in last TGT I was there first of all to have fun. Good example with that was a elvish fish spam our team decided to do on the spot just because the map had lot of water and we both rolled random elf.

So any1 who picks me is guaranteed to have chill and fun gaming experience. ;)
