is ranger meant as someone who guards the forest or like an commando warrior?

My translationprogram gives me both meanings and the description isn't totally clear either.

In the fantasy genre it generally is someone who guards the forest.

the spanish translation uses guardabosques -> who guards the forest.

In Lord of the Rings, Arathorn (Strider) is known as a 'Ranger'. However you would translate that is the same as you would translate 'Elvish Ranger'

In Basque mithology we have our own ranger named 'Basajaun' (Lord of the forest) who guards the forests, but it doesn't seem a elf at all
