One fast simple question about Woses

Post by Aldarisvet »

Hi everyone. Possibly simple stupid question, old-gamers must have answer.

http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Ents - here are Ents
http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Dr%C3%BAedain - here are Woses

Woses is a race of wild men of forest. 100% humans.
That are now Woses in Wesnoth are 100% Ents.
Developers feared to go into space of licensed Tolkien world? Surely they fully get into it, using word Woses.

So. Why?

I post it into this forum cause it is about correct translation into Russian.

I think wesnoth woses are not the same as tolkien ents.

For instance, tolkien ents pick people up, and at least in the movies they attack by grabbing their enemies, smashing them and throwing them.

Wesnoth woses don't pick people up, they attack by full body impact in somewhat comical fashion :D

Also I think there are some lore differences if you look in the help text.

I didn't see any evidence that the word "Wose" is trademarked, I think it is much older than Tolkien. It sounds like "Ent" is indeed trademarked.

Thank you for answer, so as I suspected its all about licenses.
However, I did not found woses in English e-dictionaries.

Btw, Ents was not transliterated to Russian but was 'creative-translated', with one of the translations back to English would be as 'tree-with-beard' :)
Still I like 'dreven' more.

Wesnoth woses are ents in all but name.

Tree-with-beard is not a bad translation, it is in my opinion a better workaround than wose. See: http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Treebeard
