Inspired by this , let's try to draw a map collectively, hex by hex, using the terrains from Wesnoth 1.12. :) Unfortunately, I realize now that attachments are not allowed in this game section, but this still looks the right one for such things, so we have to make things creatively and somewhat abstractly :( I'm open to suggestions on how to do this differently.

The map code is at the bottom of this post, I will try to keep it up to date when I can. You can copy it in a 'wesnoth_place.map' file and open it with the map editor if you want to visualize it.

rules:
1) the initial canvas is a 30 x 20 map of void hexes (Xv), let's keep it small since doing this in a forum is not very efficient.

2) You must modify the last version of the map code in the thread.

3) You can add/change base, overlay or both in three hexes or less, and you can do so either in empty hexes (the map starts as void everywhere) or to modify already drawn ones. Do so by posting the desired modification, like "(10,3) Mm ; (11,3) Mm; (10,4) Hh^Fds" if you want mountains at 10,3 and 11,3 and hills with summer deciduous forest at 10,4. Then copy-paste the modified map code in your post. If you don't know how to do it here is a simple way

4) You can't do more than three modifications at a time, and before doing new ones you should wait for either five other people to submit theirs (it seems a reasonable number to me, given the level of participation I expect), or three days since your last addition.

I think it would be better to have everyone paste the whole thing in each post, it's way less work for you and people wouldn't have to wait for you to update it. It shouldn't take up that much space? If it's a problem, we could add a rule that people try to go back and delete it from their post after someone else posts.

The idea is great! :) here's my contribution (I decided to improve upon the swamp section this time):
Khs (swamp keep) at 7,8
Ss^Vhs (swamp village) at 8,9
Wwg (grey shallow water) at 10,6
update map code:
btw, small request, how about allowing users to make new posts with map code, as long as editing the old ones to mention that they are outdated?
also, once this map is fully filled out, you could make a poll whether the people think it's completed, or want to add some more stuff to it, and then make another thread with an empty canvas (something like 'Let's make a map together!: round 2')

Can you explain better what you mean? I thought this is exactly what we are doing: each new new post has a new map code :hmm:

I think it is simpler to put some temporal limit, let's say after all hexes are filled we can let people make modifications for ~2 more weeks and then call it a map. It will take a while anyway: including borders there are 22*32=704 hexes to cover, which would take at least 235 iterations to complete :whistle:

If this works and people find it fun, we can make another one, maybe with different rules (for examples using the 'fill' instrument as an alternative to the three hexes, to make things faster).

Oh, sorry, I was just confused, I thought the rules were 'make a post with your changes, and update it when making further changes' for some reason.

Ok. btw, how about another proposed rule: If there are no posts for at least a week, then the '5 person' cooldown is reset (basically anyone can edit the map, even if it isn't their turn by the rules, the '5 person' cooldown will still be applied, though), this can help ensure that the progress on the forum game won't slow down too much, or just stop entirely. Maybe you can post announcements like 'cooldown reset', or something along the lines. I hope what I just said wasn't too confusing an vague.

you're actually right, I hadn't modified the rules in the OP, I have done it now.

This makes sense, I slightly modified the rules in a similar way: you can make a new modification also after three days since your last one. This should prevent the progress to stop (but hopefully I won't be drawing it alone :whistle: :P )

You won't, but I have to wait. :(
Im exited about what the result will be.

Besides, what wesnoth version should be used? If I recall it right, there are a few new terrains in 1.13 which would not be available in 1.12. Also it might cause errors if there are any new tiles and someone tries to open it in the 1.12 editor.

In my personal opinion, I think we shouldn't use 1.13 terrain yet, since quite a lot of people still use 1.12 (including me :P ), so it's better to have the map 1.12-compatible.

I agree with ForestDragon, let's stick to the stable version which is the one used by most of the players, I suppose.

So, since three days passed from my last modification, here we go:
(10,7) Wwg^Bw\r (that bridge has to go somewhere!)
