It is actually the same to charge with a horse as with a bycicle (or running): The relative speed between the both objects in question (i.e. you and your victim) is increased, therefore the energy transmitted, thus the damage done. It also means your victim does more damage to you if he hits you in your charge.

I actually did this once when I was fighting my brother.... DO NOT try it!!! It is VERY unstable and you can be "unhorsed" ridiculously easily. (The impact and shock also hurts )
