Money management: Minimum gold at the start of a level?
I noticed when playing on "easy" that you are always guaranteed 100 gold at the start of a level. Now I'm playing on "medium" and can start a level with less than 100 gold.
Is this intended, or a bug?
The difference has forced me to pay a little more attention to my Wesnoth gold budget. I recruit fewer units each level, and seem to do better as a result (which I find somewhat odd). Maybe it is because the units I do have tend to level up faster, or having fewer units forces me to play "smarter."

Actually it depends on the scenario.
In particular, on the Isle of Anduin, you can start with only 60 gold, even on easy. This is mainly to give players who rush the enemy on Blackwater Port some advantage over those who don't, and end the scenario with less gold.
We do of course, welcome discussion on whether there is a better way to do it
