Epicness - epic campaigns - we need more epicness

Post by shevegen »

This is just a thread about epicness - aka campaigns and
add-ons that are epic. This is evidently biased to my opinion
but you can list your own thoughts about any campaign, including
those not mentioned. It is a free-form thread.

So my ranking list:

1) The arabian nights is still my favourite one. I never remember
the name offhand; it's the one with the summoning circle. I simply
think it has had the best quality from all campaigns.

2) The second one is the one with the wyverns and dune-folks
thingies, and some unusual heroes. The one where elves have
to flee, you have dune herbalist and such.

3) I changed my mind and now think The Ravagers comes third. I
did not rank it that high before.

The reason actually is that I think the storyline-approach and
"bard's tale" tale telling is really really interesting. That
could be used for other campaigns too. The units are also fairly
unusual and I just love save-style (bloodloss) and various
others ideas. The executing-bosses idea is also interesting. I
do not think it works that well, but it is interesting
nonetheless.

4) At rank #4 I put the one that has like 300 scenarios or
something like that. The one with extensive crafting. And
Belzebub and so forth.

Actually, in many ways, this is by far the most epic one.
And that in itself should perhaps make it #1. But I think
that in many ways, the storyline is the weaker point here.
I understand that the author is more taking it on the fun
side, no problem; and that the mechanics are more in focus
here than the storyline per se. But I dunno - it's the only
weak point in that IMO. It gets the most epic award on its
own.

5) Hmmm .... I don't remember which one to put at place #5.

Probably the one whose name I forgot ... with unusual
heroes ... ah well.

The awkward thing in general here is that these addons
are a lot more interesting than the mainline campaigns.

I understand that for newcomers the mainline is better,
keeping things simple and so forth. But from a qualitative
point of view, I think the add-ons are more interesting.
Also add-ons such as the ship-campaign - while it has
had some issues, the idea to focus on extending
ships/vessels is a good idea.

I am sure I already forgot lots of other add-ons but
that's sort of the snapshot.

Note that #1 and #2 could be almost exchanged; the
gameplay in #2 may even be more fun, but ultimately I
think the storyline in #1 just connects better with
me. I like the storyline-approach from The Ravagers
though - that could be integrated into other campaigns,
for a few scenarios, like "re-telling events that already
happened" or something like that.

As for interesting features: the reach-ability is nice
(gets first strike sometimes e. g. if a weapon is
longer), savage-bloodloss is great etc...

Anyone having his or her own list of epic add-ons?
Does not have to be campaigns only, could be
just some interesting add-on that makes the game
more fun.

I wouldn't call these campaigns epic, but legendary.
Well, but as you use epic, I'm quite disappointed that you did not mentioned "Epical" :P.

But you mentioned the favorite add-ons out there.
Here are the names of the missing add-ons, because they (and there authors) deserve to be named:

1. To Lands Unknown by inferno8
2. Invasion from the Unknown by shadowm aka Iris. Alternatively you might be talking about "Under the Burning Suns" (Mainline).
4. Legends of the Invincibles by dugi.
5. It could be "Fate of a Princess", but there are many good campaigns out there.
The future belongs to those, who believe in the beauty of their dreams.
