why would such a torrent be necessary?

don't they receive some sort of royalties via adds when using sourceforge.net? hence you support them downloading it from the offical side.

Yes that is the main factor usually that makes torrent downloads worthwhile. Also the more options for downloading the more players we will attract! :D

Yep! Torrents also have the advantage that one server going down doesn't make the file(s) unaccessable...

Not really. For popular stuff, sure. But there is an awful lot of stuff on Torrent which has only one server announcing, and has a single point of failure just like an FTP or HTTP download site.

Personally, I consider Torrent a security threat and will only use it if there is no other option. But it's such a pain setting up and tearing down a honey-pot for the transfer that I rarely do it and, usually, decide it simply isn't worth the effort.

Which can be done by using any download manager: wget, JDownloader, Free Download Manager...

Actually, Sourceforge has several mirrors all around the world. One of them going down isn't going to make the files suddenly disappear.
Current maintainer of these add-ons:
1.14: The Sojournings of Grog, A Rough Life, The White Troll (co-author), Wesnoth Lua Pack
1.12: Children of Dragons

And, with the new owners, the bad ol' days at SF are finally behind us.

Actually, SourceForge’s front end has gone down for extended periods of time in recent history, and we’re not allowed to post direct links to the mirrors sooo
