Loading saved games from older versions

Post by revolting_peasant » March 14th, 2018, 8:48 pm

How can I tell when I can expect a saved game from an older version will load properly? Or rather - which versions are known to break previous versions' saved games? Is there a list of "save-breaking versions"?

I don't know that there's a definitive list anywhere. Generally though, you can expect problems between major versions(for example, 1.12 -> 1.13/1.14) as well as possibly between minor versions on the development releases(for example, 1.13.3 -> 1.13.4).

So, you're saying the people's saved games are typically lost forever every year or two?

Sometimes quicker :P

As the game features evolve there is a chance that saved games from older versions no longer load in newer versions. Should not happen during a "stable" supported release such as 1.12, but can happen at any time during a "development" cycle such as 1.13.
I forked real life and now I'm getting merge conflicts.

But doesn't that mean you can no longer start an arbitrary scenario of the campaigns you've completed before? And that the Wesnothpedia will have more uncovered entries again?
