[POLL] What user made campaigns you like most?

You know, an interesting metric as well might be "how many of these have you started/completed" and maybe why not finished.

In that case, here’s an addendum to my previous post:

Spoiler:

• Invasion from the unknown and it's (sic) sequel After the Storm:
  Finished both, not a fan. I strongly dislike long campaigns in general and the story is completely unremarkable.
• Bad Moon Rising and Trinity:
  Started BMR, got like three or four scenarios into it, then forgot about it entirely forever due to lack of time.
• The Soujournings of Grog:
  Started, got three scenarios into it, then forgot about it entirely forever due to lack of time and interest.
• Flight to Freedom:
  Played the Wesnoth 1.0 (?) version a decade ago, got about six scenarios into it I believe?, then I don’t remember what happened.
• Saving Elensefar:
  Completed the Wesnoth 1.0 (?) version a decade ago. I think I liked it enough to not feel I wasted my time?
• Legend of the Invincibles:
  Forced myself to complete the first chapter/part/thingy. Had to quit about two scenarios into the second chapter/part/thingy per my doctor’s advice.
• Secrets of the Ancients:
  Started, got two scenarios into it, then forgot about it entirely forever due to lack of time.
• Swamplings:
  I think I had to play one scenario to reproduce a reported engine bug but I am not sure. Otherwise unknown to me.
• To Lands Unknown:
  Tried the first scenario, abandoned it halfway through due to lack of time and interest.
• Grnk the Mighty:
  I think I tried this after discussing campaign development theory with the author but I am not sure.
• A New Order:
  Completed the Wesnoth 1.0 (?) version a decade ago. I enjoyed it. I did not include it in my previous post because it has received some major changes since then.
• Amaranthine Stone:
  Tried the first scenario, abandoned it halfway through due to lack of time. Starting to notice a pattern here.
• Galuldur's First Journey:
  I definitely tried this after discussing campaign development theory with the author but I don’t remember how far I got. Although the gameplay and storyline were relatively basic, I believe it was pretty fun anyway.
• Ooze Mini Campaign:
  Played it a few times. It was pretty short and enjoyable, I definitely recommend it — not because of the gameplay, but rather because it’s a great example of the “less is more” principle in campaign development.
• Elvish Dynasty RPG:
  Played it a few times. It was pretty enjoyable, even if the gameplay was slightly confusing at times

Campaigns that I played back when they were UMC, which have since become part of mainline:

• Northern Rebirth:
  I completed the 1.2 version. That version of the campaign’s last scenario had the dubious honor of having the longest AI turn times I’ve ever seen (about 30 minutes per turn). I pressed on anyway, and acquired an aversion for large battlefields in the process. It’s worth noting that despite my constant joking about removing it from mainline, I feel it’s pretty good for what it is, a light-hearted comedy with a strong emphasis on building mind-numbingly large armies. It’s just that I don’t like scenarios that turn Wesnoth into a mouse clicking contest (or conversely, a patience game against incredibly long AI turns).
• Under the Burning Suns:
  Best thing since sliced bread. It gets the Official shadowm Seal of Approval™.
• Sceptre of Fire:
  I inexplicably lose interest in the story around scenario 6 every single time I play this campaign, both in its original UMC incarnation, and the later mainline versions.
• Legend of Wesmere:
  I once got to the end of the original 30-something scenarios UMC version, not without some generous application of :debug commands, though. I inexplicably lose interest past the first quarter of this campaign every time ever since.
• Liberty:
  It’s pretty good, although too short for my taste.
• The Hammer of Thursagan:
  Too easy, storyline has some pretty good material but all that goes to waste due to a generally lazy and bland characterization work and some major pacing issues. What do you mean, there is a harder scenario called “The Underlevels” towards the end? I didn’t realize it was part of the campaign!
• Delfador’s Memoirs:
  I tried the UMC version back when it ended upon Delfador’s return to Irdya. I don’t remember how I felt about it. I never get past the first (playable) scenario of the mainline versions for some reason, again due to inexplicably losing (or in this case, not getting any to begin with) interest in the storyline.
• Dead Water:
  I completed this once when I was tasked with overseeing the mainlining process along with ESR. I think it was okay? It certainly doesn’t seem like it made a huge or lasting impression on me.

Mainline campaigns that were originally UMC, which I only got to play after being mainlined:

• Descent into Darkness:
  Probably the only mainline campaign besides UtBS and TRoW with a compelling storyline.
• The South Guard:
  Completed a few times, all in the elves branch because the notion of giving up my hard-earned XP at the point where this becomes a choice seems utterly ridiculous to me. After confronting the lich in the caves, we are treated to a last scenario that is rather disappointing to me, so I tend to quit at that point. Never tried the bandits branch, and the few things I’ve heard of it don’t make it seem very compelling from a storyline perspective either.
• An Orcish Incursion (revised version):
  It’s okay.
• A Tale of Two Brothers (revised version):
  Eh.

The greatest campaign I have seen, only one I ever completed, or played twice. Though I do not agree with the decision to give Golems regen, it makes first scenario even more annoying.

1.Panther Lord (and Swamp Witch Curse, Salt Wars): Great writing, well designed battles, and I love the Era of Four Moon.
2.To Lands Unknown: Cool story, good work with the Era, and Arabian Night style; the battles are not challenging in fun ways though.
3.Elvish Dynasty RPG: Love the mechanics.
4.Danse Macabre: Quirky fun.
5.Invasion from the Unknown: Not too fond of the story, but undoubtly good job.

I'm just gonna write down the UMC I've played, which may not necessarily be on the master list. Anyways, here are my votes.

Detailed Notes:

Invasion From the Unknown - I've only made it through Part One and some of Part Two of an older version and found it to be a fun campaign, especially considering that it takes place after The Burning Suns. Digging around in the files also increases my interest. One of these days I'll get around to completing the entire thing...
From my short experience, Mal Keshar (once he joins) practically carries this campaign, as Galas is technically a blank slate observing the greater events of the world around him. The custom factions are enjoyable, and I love the Aragwaithi faction when they are introduced in Part Two. The Chaos Empire is also another classic.

Legend of the Invincibles - One of those "heavy investment" campaigns. If one is willing to learn the mechanics, then LotI is an enjoyable campaign, but otherwise if one is not willing to put the time and effort into it, it may be wise to find something different. I personally love the item system and the advanced AMLAs, but the story is hit and miss at places. Legend of the Invincibles is an extremely long campaign, and when one delves into the latter half, one may be disappointed upon losing all of your hard-trained units from Part One.
As for me, I'm on the Tundra chapter of Part Two. No idea where that is in the grand scheme of things, but that is where I'm at, and I haven't touched that save in quite some time...

The Beautiful Child - A spin-off of LotI. I played it because I became burned out on the original with dealing with mage armies, but still wanted that LotI feel. It is an enjoyable campaign and a mini-LotL experience, but I would rely more on your hero units as recruited units solely serve as cannon fodder (there is no recall system outside of your heroes for TBC). This is the only UMC campaign I actually finished.

To Lands Unknown - This campaign is arguably the most unique campaign because of its spectacular use of visuals and setting. However, that aside, the gameplay will require one to "rethink" Wesnoth, as it uses completely new factions. In addition, the gameplay aspect may become more frustrating than fun at some places. Overall, while I have not finished the campaign yet, I suggest giving it a try.
I made it fairly far into this campaign, but stopped at the grand confrontation with one of the "Dark Elvish" factions. The battlefield was large, and I was slowly getting burned out I think.

Oath of Allegiance - A seemingly unfinished campaign, it tells an enjoyable tale of how an Elf gets caught up in Khalifate affairs. I'm on Chapter 5/13, and so far the story is interesting, so much so that I decided to skip ahead and read the rest in the files themselves. I look forward to how it all develops.

UMC Notable Mentions:

Bob The Mighty's RPG Era & Maps - I was introduced to Bob The Mighty's work through a friend of mine, who was attempting to beat the Labyrinth of Champions (That annoying Bat Room...). We also tried the Fall of Trent, but it quickly became infamous among our little group because we thought it impossible to get past the very first area, but that may be because we were not playing with the proper era.
I love this system, but have not gotten around to actually beating any of the maps yet. The farthest I've gotten was the "exiting the caves" from Fall of Trent playing solo, but I think I lost the save file for some reason or another. I also made some decent progress in Labyrinth of Champions; the only thing I remember is that I gotten past that accused Bat Room. (Next time, I think I'll cheat by looking into the scenario files...)

Galactic Empires - A multiplayer mod that heavily takes inspiration from A New Land. Colonize planets and command space fleets as you attempt to conquer the universe on the few maps that comes with the mod. I love the concept, but was not able to play it properly because I couldn't get a group together.

Strange Legacy - I've tried Strange Legacy, but I couldn't really get into it for some reason. I love the RPG aspects of LotI and Bob's RPG Era, but I didn't get into Strange Legacy.

Campaigns To Do:

Invasion From the Unknown & After the Storm - I've read some of the scenario files, and I really want to know how everything connects, since AtS throws a lot of stuff at you that I have yet to comprehend.

Genesis - A prequel to IftU and AtS. You know I gotta get around to this at some point...

A Rough Life - It has a high amount of downloads, so I wonder what it is all about. The premise does not really interest me though.

Amaranthine Stone- I've heard good things in places, so add it do the list!

Secret of the Ancients - It seems to be recommended by some here. I was put off because of the "Showcased Sprite" in its particular topic, but I may need to give it a try.

Inky's Quest - All right, where is my Cuttlefish. It seems interesting by reading the recommendations and the topic itself

Swamplings - I hear good things about this campaign, so I want to know what it's all about.

Red Winter - I hear the guy is doing some sort of overhaul. He needs to finish the campaign already, it has been almost two years!

These are the ones I remember playing. I must have played a few more but they didn't leave much of an impression if I don't remember them I guess. Even among these ones there are only a few that I can recall.
1. Invasion from the unknown and it's sequel After the Storm- awesome campaings, the best UMCs I've played
2. Bad Moon Rising and Trinity- don't remember much aside from bluish angel things
7. The White Troll- I'm fairly certain it included a magical white troll
10. Saving Elensefar- this was the one with a big map which acted as a hub between scenarios IIRC; good one
11. Legend of the Invincibles- this one had the most effort put into it and I appreciate it for what it is but it's really not my cup of tea
18. The Roar of the Woses- had some woses I think
24. Danse Macabre- corpses everywhere
28. Besieged Druids- there were some kind of spells I think that you could learn/equip/something
29. Inky's Quest- it had a squid?
35. To Lands Unknown- awesome graphics; I don't remember gameplay unfortunately
44. A New Order- had some humans that aren't the standard humans... I think
51. Count Kromire- vampires... I think this was a good one
56. War of the Dragon- really good as far as I remember but unfinished

As you can see, for most UMCs here I don't remember much about anything that would help me judge how good it was; I only know that I've played them

1. Invasion from the unknown and it's sequel After the Storm - I've really enjoyed the story with mainline quality.
2. Bad Moon Rising and Trinity - I've enjoyed that you control different armies in different scenarios in Trinity with leading into an epic end.
11. Legend of the Invincibles - Good if you want something of 3PIC (not epic) scale. It presents unique gameplay but the story suffers from being stretched into several hundreds of scenarios. I'd also add there (like some other series occupy one item in this list) a prequel named Affably Evil and spin-off Beautiful Child and both of them have an interesting story, which share some of unique gameplay with LotI but aren't epic-scaled. Definely a must-play if you want something epic or some kind of different gameplay.
16. Brave Wings - I liked it more than FoaP but I'd like that these two shared one place in this list too. I've enjoyed the epic end.
66. Elvish Dynasty RPG - Well, another interesting gameplay and story referencing Ooze Mini campaign in a perfect manner.

- Rebellion in the North (I can't really pin down what I like about this one, but I like it a lot)

The Soujournings of Grog is very wittily written (the dialogue), so I appreciated it quite a bit.
Likewise with the Roar of the Woses, but the various factions seemed a bit contrived.
White Troll wasn't so great as I recall. There were some missions that seemed to drag on (one where you went west, then north through the mountains seemed to take forever)
Legend of the Invincibles is awesome from the item drop perspective. Some of the dialogue could use "re-englishing" and smoothing out. Sometimes it seems that Dugi attempts to change too many playstyle related factors from one chapter to the next, but overall it's quite good. I liked Beautiful Child (same author) too. Mission objectives could use a bit more explicit spelling out and hints, but it was a rather coherent storyline and actually seemed better dialogued than LotI.

The Sojournings of Grog - Very good fun. I'd love to be able to import the characters from UtBS into the final scenario.
Swamplings - Best writing of all the scenarios I've played. Should be made mainline.
Inky's Quest - Play as a cuttlefish. Interesting change of pace.
To Lands Unknown - I never completed it, but you have to admire the ambition. The ported graphics look beautiful.
The Earth's Gut - This campaign is unfinished, which is shame because it was a real cracker. It ties in well with events in the BfW universe, has a lot of innovative scenarios and above all, in large part its a dungeon crawler, which is my favourite variety of campaign. I'd love to see it finished off.

There are a couple of other RPGs I tired which were pretty neat, but this side of heaven I just don't have the time to play them through fully.

I play all games on Easy level as I haven't them the time struggle through something onerous. I will abandon campaigns if I find them too difficult. So here's a hint for anyone designing a campaign: if you want to maximise your player-base, make sure that you include an Easy level and make sure that Easy level is actually easy enough to complete. (This goes for Mainline campaigns too. The first scenario in Dead Water is far too hard!)
