Required to use mouse on Android?

Am I crazy, or is having to use a mouse on the Android a new feature? Im about 95% sure I was playing this in 2012 without the whole mouse emulation thing, so if there's a way to just use the touch screen I'd love to know.

Before the game loads, after you pressed the app button, there is a "change configuration" field.

Go there to Mouse emulation configuration -> Mouse emulation mode -> Pointer follows finger

The downside of this is that it may be hard to press the right buttons.

Yes, the current Android app works with mouse emulation mode (be it following finger, or relative movement, but mouse emulation after all).

You may recall playing the OLD Wesnoth app, which was made by another developer and is no longer maintained:

This one didn’t have mouse emulation, it was more touch-screen oriented.
