[POLL] Removing planning mode

Re: [POLL] Removing planning mode
I tried planning mode. Cool concept. It didn't help me, though, so I stopped using it.
However, I was a Wesnoth player before planning mode existed, so it may be that I am just stuck in old ways.
I appreciate it but don't use it, thanks.
(Note to moderator, if the moderator cares: I think that I may inadvertently have two accounts on this server. If I now remember, my main account has the username "oaq". The name "tbtkorg" was something I used on the Free Internet Chess server; apparently I used it once here, too, and absentmindedly again today. At any rate, there is no deliberate sockpuppeting here. I'll try to log in as "oaq" now.)

(Note to moderator, if the moderator cares: Yes, "tbtkorg" is "oaq". If this is against policy, feel free to delete account "tbtkorg". The account "oaq" is the only one I need. Of course, you probably don't care -- nor do I -- but there it is. Thanks.)

Re: [POLL] Removing planning mode
Ithink that the target ppl for this feature are those who play team matches (like 2v2) where team cooperation is essential. BTW have you ever thought about planning moves of your allies? It would be a nice thing to tell your ally to cover your units with a blocker.

Re: [POLL] Removing planning mode
Well, you can do that with team messages as well, so...
Re: [POLL] Removing planning mode
hi,
planning mode is useful only for a game with teammate. it let you show your moves without words, especially for players which english is not a primary language.
can someone make it as add-ons if it will be removed?

I suspect it might be impossible to convert to an addon with the current state of the engine. (Which just means that engine changes would be needed in order to do so, possibly quite significant ones.) It's an interesting idea, though.
Re: [POLL] Removing planning mode
I never use it, and even find it bothering.
Beheld the origins of BFW.

Re: [POLL] Removing planning mode
Perhaps we could remove the default keybinding for toggling planning mode. That way, people who don't want to use it won't activate it by mistake. It would still be in the menu, of course.

Re: [POLL] Removing planning mode
Well, you could use team messages in conjunction with planning mode - ie, ask your teammate to plan a move so that you can see how it goes, something like that. I don't think directly planning moves for your allies is likely to happen, though I suppose gfgtdf would be a better person to talk to about it.

Re: [POLL] Removing planning mode
The suggestion of removing it was because apparently it has some bugs which are not easy to fix, and no-one was interested in maintaining it. However, since then, gfgtdf has expressed interest in maintaining it, so the possibility of it being removed is greatly reduced now.

Re: [POLL] Removing planning mode
Have the bugs with planning mode been worked on? This becomes a lot more important, since 1.14 will be the version released on Steam.

Re: [POLL] Removing planning mode
I think that, if the bugs aren't ironed out by the time of the 1.14 release, planning mode will probably be removed for the official 1.14 release. (That could either mean #ifdeffing it out or actually excising it entirely.)

Re: [POLL] Removing planning mode
I just registered to say that planning mode is vital in competitive ladder play.
In particular, removing planning mode would be a heavy nerf to the Ulfserker. You need planning mode to figure out what killing chance your Ulf would have if you would move it to a hex that is currently occupied by one of your units and then attacked with it.
You can't do this reliably without planning mode, because sometimes your unit that was originally on the hex can't move back due to ZOC or the move limit (maybe it's a slowed unit on terrain with high movement cost). Also the back-and-forth moved unit would lose the chance to rest heal.
Planning mode is also incredibly useful in serious play to check out all the ZOC and "threat range" implications a few movements of your units would have. Doing this in your head, maybe with a timer running, is painful.
