BfW: 12th best free PC game according to PC Gamer UK
I received my copy of PC Gamer today and they advertised it as an 'indie' issue. This instantly raised my hopes because I've pestered PC Gamer a few times to write about Wesnoth because I genuinely feel it's a game that deserves some press attention and often gets overlooked in favour of other OSS/free/indie games. Now, I'm not saying that my pestering has resulted in this little feature but I'd like to think I played my part!
They ran a feature on the 50 best free PC games and Wesnoth ranked number 12, 1 place below Freeciv and 2 above Trackmania - not bad at all I thought.
I'm just happy knowing that the wider community gets some small nudge towards Wesnoth.

Below Freeciv?
Haha just kidding. That is pretty good news!
Thanks for sharing the news, and also thanks for helping try to draw attention to Wesnoth. Kudos!
EDIT: I don't suppose there's any chance of a link to an online article? I'm rather curious what exactly they said.

Nice! We don't get reviewed often these days that I know of because most of these publications and websites have "already done that game". They're used to sequels and named expansions over steady evolution.
Clearly we need to start releasing Wesnoth 2: Now It's Personal, Wesnoth: Mists of Elfaria, 2 Wes 2 Noth, and so on.

Watched a recent video podcast where Wesnoth is mentioned as an example for open source developed games.Gambit wrote:Nice! We don't get reviewed often these days that I know of because most of these publications and websites have "already done that game".
Wish I had bookmarked the page, or the one where I found the link, it was nice to watch.
"Alien Arena" is handling that problem by just calling every new release "Alien Arena [year of the release]" and claim it to be another sequel. They're used to sequels and named expansions over steady evolution.
Don't forget the sex sales argument:Clearly we need to start releasing Wesnoth 2: Now It's Personal, Wesnoth: Mists of Elfaria, 2 Wes 2 Noth, and so on.

September 2013. (http://www.pcgamer.com/2013/07/30/pc-ga ... die-issue/) Free is free-to-play as far as I understand their website (not reading this magazine). I would be interested in a list of the other games as well.Jabie wrote:What issue number is this?

Oh wow. Thanks for putting in the whole list! For the first time in about 10 years, I have a job that leaves me with a normal amount of free time. I'll use some of it this way.

If you haven't tried it out, I'd start with Dwarf Fortress. It is tied with Wesnoth for my favorite free game. (If you are going to try it out, use the Lazy Newb Pack and one of the graphic overlays. My personal preference is Ironhand, but a lot of people like Phoebus as well. It makes the game a lot more approachable to a new player who isn't used to ASCII graphics.) DF has a huge depth of content. Spelunky is another great one, and the improved version is coming out for the PC on August 8th. Definitely worth your time.
Current projects: Arcane Defense (MP Scenario), Cavanagh The Conqueror (Campaign)

I found the list quite disappointing. A bunch of roguelikes selected apparently partly according to the amount of "visuals" (ZAngbandTk of all things?), stuff that is hardly a game at all (Republia Times, seriously? Interactive satire, maybe, but a game?) and several clones of classic games?

Re: BfW: 12th best free PC game according to PC Gamer UK
Just a little update, PC Gamer UK have re-issued their list this month.
Sadly Wesnoth is now placed 21st. I can reproduce the whole list if anyone is interested.
But it's good to see that Wesnoth remains in the consciousness of the wider gaming community. On a thought, regarding the ongoing discussion on publicity for Wesnoth, I wonder if any magazines would be interested in a feature piece from one of the long term devs and the ins and outs of one of the longest running free open source games?
