I found out about Wesnoth when someone posted about it at the Age of Wonders forum.
Re: How did you find out about Wesnoth?
I was reading the Wikipedia article for "tactical role-playing games" and somebody helpfully included a link to the game there.

I first found BfW a while ago (before 1.0) and couldn't get myself past the unfinished look. Since then real life has entered the picture and I've found myself with less time, especially gaming time, so I eventually switched from Windows to Linux. Still, I couldn't go that long without playing anything so I started looking for something fun and polished that I can take in short chunks of time. BfW is definitely there now.

I was just taking a look on a demo and free games and in de strategy zone i found one which was version 0.8.6 and other 1.0(don't know why) Fool of me who chose the 1st one and stayed with it until 1.2 release(if memory serves...)

I first got it on a Sam Linux CD that my Mom gave me several years ago. Unfortunately, the operating system could only be run off of the CD, so I lost all my saved games every time I shut the computer down.
More recently, I obtained Wesnoth 1.4 from the official BFW website (i.e. wesnoth.org)
