An Idea of Wesnoth Comics.

Post by AxalaraFlame »

I plan to create a series of Wesnoth Comics, about things happening around our Irdya and this forum, but I am very bad at drawing comics on computer. Could anybody offer me some suggestions? If no, I plan to draw it on papaer and take photos to upload.

You could always just make it a sprite comic, little to no drawing required (depending if you want to draw your own backgrounds or not). Just have to paste in the wesnoth sprites.

If you plan to make a comic about the forum (and I am assuming you are using forumers as characters) and it's a comedy/satire, you can do the same thing as the sprite comic and just use the members' avatars. this would only really work in a comedy I feel, because of the way most avatars are, a lot of people are going to be floating heads or in some other way missing a part of their body. This makes it seem far less serious, which is pretty bad unless it's a comedy (which usually pokes fun at bad things)

You could always just use clip art like this guy: http://www.mnftiu.cc/category/gywo/war81/
Honestly, when it comes to comics, it's more about writing than drawing, at least these days. It's all been downhill since Windsor McKay in terms of drawing ;)

Why not just use Wesnoth units and portraits?

I only have a camera in hand, and my godfather won't allow me to get a scanner...but whatever, I am going to make it and update it punctually.

If you're going to use camera, then, 2 suggestions:
a) If you're going to use pencil, then get GIMP, and use Colors/Brightness and Contrast to make graphics more visible;
b) Use Text tool to write dialogs, text written by hand will be possibly unreadable on a photo.

I'm going to go one further: ink your pencil lines with a marker then erase the remaining pencil, then shoot it, then gimp it. http://wiki.wesnoth.org/Inking_With_Pencils is good. If you want to stick with a pencil Ebony pencils seem to photograph well.

How are your photography skills? If you're just a happysnapper and the Auto mode is not doing a good job, then I recommend using a desk lamp with you're work laid on a flat surface, preferably using white fluorescent light bulbs. If you can't do that, then of course use the flash, but for closeups remember to use the macro mode.

When I take pictures of my work, I tend to use a long exposure setting with a tripod, that way you get nice even lighting across the surface of the paper, whereas a flash tends to blind the middle section, and darken the edges.
However, my camera might be more sophisticated than yours. Remember there's a difference between "exposure", and "exposure compensation." Exposure compensation controls the brightness, but I don't recommend altering that setting unless is helps.

Don't use natural light when taking photos though, you're better off finding the brightest room in your dwelling, and doing what I mentioned above.

If you're a pro photographer with a DSLR and a bag full of gear, then ignore this advice.

If you’re running Windows, just use something like Paint.NET, make some boxes, and insert some Wesnoth portraits and unit images for art. It doesn’t have to be complicated.
