HttT: Which dwarf units are available for recruit?

Hello!

I'm playing wesnoth 1.8 (Linux Debian), HttT campaign. When dwarfs become available for recruit, I can only recruit fighters and thunderers, but not guardsman. However guardsman (sentinels) are mentioned several times during walkthough.

So, my question is: Is it OK that I'm only able to recruit fighters and thunderers?

Guardsman become available at the end of the first scenario if the Dwarvish Leader survive. But if you don't get them, it's not a big deal. You are able to recruit about a dozen other unit types at this point, so missing one isn't going to kill you. I never ran into a situation where I thought "man, am I glad to have these guardsman", though I suppose they could be very helpful at the second to last scenario of the campaign.

Do you mean the "The Lost General" scenario?
I've seen two blue dwarves fighting orcs, but they've died eventually.
Are you saying that if I've managed to save one of them, I would've been able to recruit guardsman since then?

Yes, The Lost General is the one. In the big cavern with a hole in the middle, there is a passage going towards the top of the screen. Up there is a dwarvish leader who recruits some dwarves that are fighting the orcs. If the leader survives (maybe you also have to reveal him on the map?), he will send some of his best guardsmen with you.

Strange... I do not remember seeing any dwarf leader there (I usually always explore the whole map). Just two alone dwarves.

That is pretty embarrassing, since I wanted those units just for fun and now I'm on level 20 and I don't think I'll go back to level 15 and start over.
Too bad there is nothing about this in walkthrough. I think I'll add some info on this.

Depending on the difficulty, you have to be very quick to be there in time to save the dwarf leader. Be quicker next time and you will see him.

Yeah, I usually save him first, and then deal with Lionel, not the other way around. And also, if look carefully,

there's a hidden loyal ulfserker in the level.

Usually sending a couple thunderers stops the orcs and fighters stop the undead. Guardsmen, IMO I didn't find much use for until the last scenario.

Yes, I've loaded a save from that scenario and was able to see him now.

yeah. find him with a merman but where is this ulfserker to be found actually?
is he in the water just before the southwestern villages? (where the wall cracks on turn 20
and undead come out?)

It's been a while since I played that scenario but I think there was a whirlpool in the water you needed to enter...

i bet that ulfserker is drowning or something?

The merman will swim through the whirlpool and end up in a nearby cave. The ulfserker is stranded there and will happily join you.
