[April Fool's] How much would you be willing to pay...

Post by jb »

We are considering offering premium service of Wesnoth for a nominal fee. This income will be used help optimize Wesnoth's servers, some of which are badly in need of an upgrade. Additionally, we hope to attract new talent to help create more premium art by paying artists and musicians.

I understand this may be quite disappointing for several users. I was asked to test user opinion on this concept of paying for Wesnoth. Don't worry, basic Wesnoth will always be free!

Basic Wesnoth includes:
-unlimited single player.
-up to 40 hours a month of official server usage for MP games.
-requires ALL users to register a nickname.
-forced to sift through some advertising when playing online.

Premium Wesnoth includes:
-unlimited single player.
-unlimited offical server usage for MP games.
-requires ALL users to register a nickname.
-access to the new RNG which is more accurate.
-ad free online gaming.

Personally I am not so sure what the way to go should be. I think several things should be considered:
1) Make it "amount of RNG seeds" based instead of basing things on access per month. As in "the first 10,000 random numbers are free, the next 100,000 cost $9.99".
2) Contributors, no matter if Artists or Coders should have free Premium access. This would directly increase the amount of possible developers, since if you don't want to pay for Premium, just contribute.

Lets see what the users think accurate random numbers are worth, really looking forward to seeing the results of this poll!

But players with a better RNG would have a better chance to win ! Please don't make us pay for being able to play competitively.

Those sound like pretty good deals, where do I sign up?
I assume this will also apply to the iPod version of Wesnoth to?

I don't really care one way or the other about MP, since I never play it, but I think the community might lose contributors if these paid people come in and start doing the things the contributors have always done for free. The contributors might feel like their work is being taken over, or they might think "Why shouldn't I get paid for this too? These people have never contributed anything to the project for free, why should I continue doing it?"

But then again, there might be no problems at all. Just my two cents.

I think it's worth noting that the more we pay for Wesnoth, the more money it can have for auxiliary projects. With enough money, we'll be able to pay artists to see zoom-in close-ups of battle scenes, like Fire Emblem. I think this makes sense since Wesnoth is already basically a free clone of Fire Emblem.

I wouldn't want "Premium Wesnoth" since I don't play MP and I don't have any issue with the current RNG.
But I might consider paying for it just cause I want to donate money to wesnoth. :D

The Battle for Wesnoth is a Free, turn-based tactical strategy game with a high fantasy theme, featuring both single-player, and online/hotseat multiplayer combat. Fight a desperate battle to reclaim the throne of Wesnoth, or take hand in any number of other adventures... more »
Not planing to pay for a free game, that would be stupid...anyway, making a premium wesnoth is the worst idea I've read through the forums (yeah, even worse than making all units have only 1 attack that always hits), so, no, I'm not paying for it, that goes against the open source software belief and would make me quit the game...
anyway, I suppose this is an april's fool joke, if it is not the guy who had this idea should bew burned and turned into a lich just to be burned again :D

This is easy to fix. Just give them money, too! Give them your two cents, to be specific.
