This is a Great, Great, Game.

Post by Lancer »

Truly it is.

I'm back after a couple of months of inactivity from Wesnoth,
and I'm planning on playing it again, re-educating myself with the tutorial. :lol2:

Anyhow, this game is really interesting, it's so complex yet so simple to play.
It has a wide variety of tactics and strategies,
and a wide arsenal of units.
I like the day/night system, making it more realistic.
The different factions which all are played on their own style, is truly unique and awesome.
Not only that, this game reminds me of an old favorite of mine; Advance Wars for the GameBoy Advance handheld console.
The nice and sweet community of Wesnoth is just heart-warming.
There are always dedicated Wesnoth players, veterans and newbies alike, and there are always those talented artists that are gifted with the drawing skills.
I have never seen such an overwhelming gaming community of goodness and kindness
(I truly mean that).

Keep up the good work!
I like you all!

Now now, if Wesnoth was truly a great, great [grand] game it would have spawned off four generations.

Fallacious logic. The truly, truly great games are the ones still being played several years after launch. The only reason supposedly great games get sequels is because they don't make money after everyone's bought a copy. You have to get them to buy something new. The exception being MMOs, which you can often download for free, but have to subscribe to. I shudder to think how much money Warcrack has made its developers...

There's a joke in there… albeit kind of a lame joke, but hey.

Fallacious logic.
Yeah, it's fallacious logic because open source games don't get clone sequels, by which I mean sequels that are pretty much the exact same engine with different content. Open-source games just evolve directly into those sequels.

CIP, the game warcraft got this with the subsequent "warcraft II" and "starcraft", which were built off the same codebase (I read this in an interview with their coders; only for later titles like warcraft III did they actually start from a clean slate). We have undergone roughly the same level of evolution (between about 0.5 and now) that happened between warcraft I and warcraft II; or perhaps Age of Empires I and II.

Clone sequels (or expansion packs) are almost purely a commercial phenomenon, because only commercial outfits need to pimp a title for as much cash as it's worth. Unfortunately, artists aren't paid as much as coders (and their work has far less, actually zero risk of collapsing as a project, which is a very real risk with code), so it's both cheaper and safer to re-pimp an existing title into a sequel, rather than going out on a limb with a dangerous new title. New titles might have code-design issues that are totally unfeasible (but only discovered the hard way), and might end up being un-fun to play. Clone sequels are proven winners.

OSS games -could- get sequels that are "a radically different game, with the same characters/background", (a la mario SNES -> mario 64, or mario world -> mario kart) but that really hasn't been done, yet AFAIK.
