Re: Protest of Action by Admin-NOTE: Potentially Offensive Name
"approach" is referring to the fact he got banned without a warning, not the fact he got banned because of a poorly chosen nick. As far as I understood, he did not argue whether getting banned for that nick was fair or not.I disapprove of the draconian and unreasonable approach taken here.
Don't trust me, I'm just average player.

Just because he said he got banned without a warning doesn't mean he did.

My post just previous to yours:"approach" is referring to the fact he got banned without a warning, not the fact he got banned because of a poorly chosen nick. As far as I understood, he did not argue whether getting banned for that nick was fair or not.
You seem to be repeating me, yet under the impression that you're arguing against me?Obviously, since he chose the name, he didn't find it "profane" himself, but was quite happy to change it once met by someone who found it offensive. The OP found the handling of the situation to be unreasonable, not the rule.
Re: Protest of Action by Admin-NOTE: Potentially Offensive Name
I'm pretty sure that all or most server mods agree that any offensive [profanity, racist, or anything else they feel that could be offensive to someone else] nicks, game names, etc are forbidden. They do usually ask if other mods agree (IIRC) that it is potentially offensive. The mods are fair, trust me. Soliton is probably one of the nicest mods on the server, I do not see why people are complaining about the mods. Each and every single of the mods are very, very, VERY carefully chosen. They are ALL known to be fair and just, only banning and kicking those that deserve it. "Silly nicks" such as the one in this thread should be thought out carefully: what your nick, game name, text, etc is could offend someone no matter how silly it is.Thus, the mods try to avoid someone getting offended at all.
I can't speak for the mods, though.

Re: Protest of Action by Admin-NOTE: Potentially Offensive Name
Obviously this matter has created some controversy so if I may take a moment address the issue from my own perspective perhaps I can clear things a little. As c2p indicated in reference to my post I did not see the name as offensive since the nature of it was rather ridiculous in my view (Sexy_Hitler versus, say for example, Heil, which I would feel to be entirely unacceptable from anyone) however, that being said, I understand where it could be. As I stated I realize the strong emotions conjured by any reference to Hitler and Naziism, even when it is a joke. Like Mica said before me someone could still be offended and I respect that. My father is Jewish and we enjoy poking fun at the diabolical tyrant. (One of my favorite movies of all time, or I suppose really two movies were both versions of "The Producers" by Mel Brooks.) Doing so just helps to shrink the man I feel, but we understand what he meant to the world and are careful with what we say and where we say it.
Even if just for a moment, my name can be seen by anyone who is also playing the game, and this game is not mine alone. I did not make it nor do I watch over its servers, and if it is decided that any reference to Hitler, given the sensitivty inevitably associated with it, is unacceptable by those who are responsible for it than I am willing to accept that. While I may disagree, again based on the nature of the whole name, I understand and respect their stance on the matter and will be satisfied to simply choose another, less potentially offensive nick and keep references to the joke out of the public view. Please do not get upset with c2p for arguing that point on my behalf. To c2p, I do thank you for recognizing that part of my post, but I wish to let you know that I am not worried over not being able to use that name for this game anymore.
That aside I wish to thank the administrators/moderators for addressing this matter so promptly and the reason with which you replied. I also wish to apologize to Noy3 for the false accusation. As I mentioned this was all coming to me second hand so I am sure a detail or two got missed. I hate to drag this up any more than I have to, but I wanted to make certain that everything was clear before this got much further. This indeed was a protest more of the action than my inability to use the name; that was the more important aspect to me. However the action was addressed and the source of the matter, that being the missed warning, was recognized. Perhaps in future versions using a different color and/or specific sound for messages from moderators would help avert this. As to this particular matter, however, I am well enough satisfied with the end result. I hope this ties up all the loose ends. Thank you all again.

I wish I had as good form as you, Rob. Kudos.
On my part, I'm sorry for coming across as complaining about a mod team which I notice and appreciate (and whom I think generally have created a very pleasant culture here, I fully recognize that ungrateful-seeming, but secretly donating gamers such as myself enjoy Wesnoth culture due to their vigilance - thanks guys).
Being accidentally taken for a racist/bigot/nazi happens to me fairly often on the Wesnoth servers, since to my nick is very close to a nick used by another Wesnoth player (cc2) who loves to press buttons for the sake of provocation - so I'm quick to defend. But I don't mean to complain about the mods (though grrr is terrible at playing Zombies!, it's true).
I am hoping they are careful to get warnings clearly through before bans, and perhaps be extra sure in a case like "Sexy Hitler", whom is otherwise acting amicably. I think any reasonable person will be ready to change his name, even if he doesn't think it's an offensive name, if he understands that it's against whatever rules apply on whatever site.

Re: Protest of Action by Admin-NOTE: Potentially Offensive Name
I think this is the preferred outcome - and the goal. The moderators do not take pleasure in forcing reasonable people to change joke names, but such names tend to, in my experience, end up being a magnet for *other* hecklers. It is conducive to everyone to limit potentially offensive (or political) names so reduce the number of silly incidents that escalate into major incidents on the server.c2p wrote:I am hoping they are careful to get warnings clearly through before bans, and perhaps be extra sure in a case like "Sexy Hitler", whom is otherwise acting amicably. Re: Protest of Action by Admin-NOTE: Potentially Offensive Name
Well I remember once while I was in the lobby browsing for games, and a player kept saying"HAIL HITLER" in German. I told him to stop but he continued. Just wanted to let you all know.Dave wrote:FYI we do not allow any nicks or game names referring to Hitler or Naziism.

IMO in this case, before banning him one could just have told him to change his name & not to enter again with such nicks. I'm pretty sure he would have understood it. Or a warning kick. Direct ban is abusive (in my opinion).

And that's pretty much what happened here, from my reading... (only that the warning was missed)cmonyiman wrote:IMO in this case, before banning him one could just have told him to change his name & not to enter again with such nicks. But perhaps a suggestion could be to change the policy (at least for first time offenders) to warning, warning, ban or warning, kick, warning, ban rather than warning, ban?

*no* moderator would kick or ban without issuing a warning (probably more than one warning). It just seems that the warnings were not perceived in this case.

no! Do you not get it? It's all part of an elaborate scheme by the mods, banning innocent people to get them to sign up on the forum to complain, and then hope they become a regular forum user. :p

Re: Protest of Action by Admin-NOTE: Potentially Offensive Name
Someone could create a program or something that prevents people from logging on to the lobby if they have certain keywords in their. Players could be told to remove the inappropriate word in their name before even logging on. It probably wouldn't catch all the bad names, but it could prevent some misunderstandings like this.
of course, I'm just thinking of random ideas. I have no idea how this would be done, or how hard it would be to do.
