Can not download the game or connect to server in China
Hi, it has been quite a problem since 1.4 release that people in China can no longer connect to wesnoth.org nor download the game and play in official server. I have noticed that in Chinese forum as well as from my friends in China. I guess they have some kind of fireware in China that prevent user from connecting. I wonder if there is a way of fixing this. Perhaps related to host ip?Some ppl used proxy server, but too slow for downloading. I guess ok for online gaming.

Can you provide the results of a traceroute to wesnoth.org and sourceforge.net?
For Windows, go to Start, click Run, type "cmd", click OK and type: "traceroute wesnoth.org"
Windows Vista users can open Run with the keyboard combination Windows Key + R.
When you have the results select them with the mouse and then use ALT + SPACE + E + K to copy.

If sourceforge is accessible they can just go to http://downloads.sourceforge.net/wesnoth/ and download.tracert to wesnoth.org wrote: 1 2 ms 1 ms 1 ms SX55154F814 [192.168.2.1]

Hi, i have tried but traceroute seems to be not a internal or external command and cannot run in there. I will see if i can get it to work.

In windows the command is named 'tracert'
Re: Can not download the game or connect to server in China
I admit that I'd feel it'd be kind of neat if Wesnoth was popular enough in China that the government would actually bother to blacklist the site and servers with the great firewall, but I suppose that's wishful thinking.

I would not be surprised if the Chinese government has some kind of automated process for detecting and blocking sites which mention things like that.

People in repressive computing environments (e.g. China, students) can use anonymizing proxies both to get around filters/firewalls to blocked sites and to prevent The Authorities from seeing what they are up to. For more information, check out the Tor project. If you are unable to get to that site, pm me and i can try to make a copy available on another server.

I don't know what the cause of windenchanter's technical difficulties are, but I would not at all be surprised if that was the case. Wesnoth is not the only community I know of that has been cut off in China for mentioning such topics, while otherwise being entirely unrelated to anything of a political nature.Dave wrote:Note that we currently have a topic in the Off-topic forum about Tibetan independence from China.zookeeper wrote:I admit that I'd feel it'd be kind of neat if Wesnoth was popular enough in China that the government would actually bother to blacklist the site and servers with the great firewall, but I suppose that's wishful thinking.

Re: Can not download the game or connect to server in China
I was not aware of the Tibetian topic in the forum, however i suspect this could be the cause. I have no problem playing wesnoth myself since I am in Canada, it is just when i try to introduce to my friends in China suddenly it seems nothing worked. I can tell from the Chinese forum that it worked before. I guess there must be a way of getting around it. I haven't tried myself but using proxy servers and p2p downloading software could enable people to download wesnoth (Thunder 5, eMule, BitComet). Just too slow. My friend told me it is 10k per second so I have to send the 100mb something file to his email. I will recommand my friend to try the Tor program, thank you very much for the info.

Its my fault yeah... I didn't know the firewall was omnipresent... I'd have been shot if I was in China (by players? ). Maybe if the multiplayer server and the forums were hosted on different servers.... (or are they already?)Sapient wrote:So the only way to play Wesnoth is to overthrow communism? dang...

Actually after analyzing our traffic, we don't think the thread in the off-topic forum is what caused it. We stopped receiving traffic from China a good ten days before that thread was started.appleide wrote:Its my fault yeah... I didn't know the firewall was omnipresent... It is possibly caused by our move to the ibiblio servers, which are possibly blacklisted in China.

Wow, glad I moved back to the US from China before all this happened!

That would be sheer insanity.Dave wrote:Actually after analyzing our traffic, we don't think the thread in the off-topic forum is what caused it. We stopped receiving traffic from China a good ten days before that thread was started.
